This is message from my friend Manrico:

"It is with great sorrow that I tell you that John Clarke passed away today.
He died peacefully with his family at his side.

All of us who had the privilege of having met John know that he was a truly
special person. He will be missed by all and our community has suffered a
great loss.

I will pass along any information about a public memorial when I hear of it."

The news of John's death is not unexpected but it is still hard to hear. We
will miss him.

John Clarke grew up in Vancouver and developed a passion for exploration at an early age. Over a 30-year period, he explored British Columbia's Coast Mountains, from the Fraser Valley in the south to the Stikine River in the north. Many of his trips were done solo. He has done more first ascents of peaks than anyone in the world!
In the years following the death of Randy Stoltmann in 1994, John focused his efforts on conservation, providing slide presentations and educating the public, particularily the young, about the intrinsic value of wilderness and the importance of its preservation for future generations of human beings. "I have come to believe that the preservation of wilderness and its contained biodiversity is a vital mission for the twenty first century and beyond. I have decided to dedicate all my energy into educating the public, and particualrly the young, about the intrinsic value of wilderness and the importance of its preservation for future generations of human beings. Supported by a diverse group of colleagues from a variety of walks of life I have initiated an ambitious program of public education. I believe that my 30 years as an explorer have provided me with a unique perspective on wilderness which I have begun to communicate through school-based lectures and wilderness trips."

Over the next years, his Wilderness Education for Youth program was a huge success. His website was hosted under bivouac.com for the first few years. In 2002, John Clarke received the Order of Canada, for his remarkable accomplishments as a mountaineering explorer and his wilderness education work.

On January 23, 2003, John Clarke passed away peacefully with his family at his side. John leaves wife Annette Lehnacker and son Nicholas, as well as other family.
