Just wondering what the local attitude is around most of the crags in southern Alberta and BC is concerning dogs at the crag? My girlfriend and I are heading out in early June and will be hittin up Skaha, then maybe Canmore/Banff/Kananaskis areas and im hoping the attitude towards dogs is a friendly one cause we really want to bring her along. Shes a great puppy but we dont want to upset other climbers in the area. Shes a 1 year old German Sheppard. Any comments?? Thanks

Dogs are fine as long as they are well behaved, quiet, and don't get in other's way. Shepherds tend to be loud puppies, but not always. Some dogs tend to get a little worried/excited when they see 'dad' heading up off the ground... that worry that you won't come back. See how your dog reacts. It's it's fine, go for it. Some will say otherwise, and state that no dog is appropriet at the crag... those people can log their complaints with my pooch with the understanding that he weighs more than most sport climbers.

In reply to: As for dogs, I dislike the ones that constantly bakring thats all. I think this applies to dog's anywhere anytime not just at the crag. (Thinking of the dog across the street that starts barking at 6:30 every morning) I have a 8 month old pup & he gets excited & barks when people walk by with dogs but other than that he just sits down & hangs out. most people are cool with it. I climb at skaha & I will warn you to CHECK YOUR DOG FOR TICKS, I found one on my pup a few days ago. just worries me.

Sounds funny saying, "Hey, I've climbed with your dog" , but I have, and not only do you not even notice he's there, but he carries his own weight... literally, carries ropes, gear, beer, etc. All the people I've climbed with over that last few years that have brought their dogs along, were all well behaved, quiet, you hardly noticed they were there. I'm not a dog owner, in fact I'm allergic to them. .............................................. ...................................This would be the same dawg.. Personally, there's been a few people I've run into that I thought should be muzzled and on a leash.

If you seriously don't want to upset other climbers, don't take the dog to the crag. No matter how well-trained she is, some people aren't comfortable around dogs, and some are tired of having to keep an eye on other people's pets. By taking a dog to the crag, you are going to upset someone.
