Has anyone ever been do Gibralter Rock Gym in Windsor? Might be making a trip down that way soon and I'm wondering if it is any good.

How many routes? What is the difficulty like? Bouldering? Overhangs?

Thanks,
Dave

The gym in Windsor is getting better year by year. They recently built two new caves (one which freestanding that you top out on) and they have a long overhanging lead wall which is great. There is also some excellent route setting, especially by the gym owner Kevin.

I didn't know there was a gym in Windsor - sweet. I have a friend who lives near Windsor and I might take him there. :)

Do you happen to know roughly how many routes there are? Cool wall features? Overhangs? Height of walls?

Rockzen,

I'd estimate there are probably 20 top-ropeable lines, each with one or two taped routes. There are seven or eight leadable lines (some overlap with toproping). Wall height would vary from 25 feet (mainly beginner and teaching routes) to 35-40 feet if you encorporate the degree of overhang of some of the walls.

Most of the walls are texturized and vary from vertical to tremendously overhung. Features include roofs, aretes, dihededrals and even a crack climb.

The bouldering area is excellent with tons of taped problems of varying skill levels. The central feature of the gym is a large freestanding bouldering structure that is 'top-outable'.

Overall the route setting is what really shines at this gym. The selection of holds isn't that great, but what the route designers have you doing with the holds they've got more than makes up for it.

Thats my gym!!!

its totaly good... We have tonns of bouldering, and wall climbing.

Kevin just put up a new campus board.

there are probably over 20 top ropes there, and a bunch of lead walls.

2 bouldering caves

on one you can top out on it, its pretty cool

and Adam is a kick ass route setter! lots of good routes too.

Well... I made it to Gibralter Rock Gym on the weekend. It is sweet. I'd rate it about the same as my gym (Higher Ground). Lots of routes and problems to work on. Cool wall features.

Only complaints are routes a bit crowded - not a big deal. Was hard to find too as I didn't know where it was located and it wasn't really visible from the road.

Thanks all for repsonses etc...

I went for the bouldering comp in December. The bouldering was quite good. That "island" rates as one of my favourite features I've ever been on in a gym. However, I'd have to say that I wouldn't go to the gym if it was located in Toronto. I think the gyms here are bigger and better. Plus it was a little annoying having to walk through that whole complex to go to the bathroom or change into climbing clothing. I really liked the comp though! I'll be back next year in ABS4.

Ya... the island is kinda cool. Unfortunately I was burned out from routes by the time I got to it, so I didn't get much of a chance to work on problems.

I hear ya. What a pain. Also, I found the wall texture made it hard to smear. They need to put some good tunes on too.

All in all, it was ok. Come to think of it, I think I like my gym better, but I'd go back if I was in the area.

The reason why we cant have loud music is cause the gymnastics ppl are next door, and they pay more rent ie more floor space....I think its bullshit

so we end up having to listen to bugs bunny and stuff while we climb. IT SUCKS...occasionally we get the tune cranked... but usually thats the case
