Hi there,

I'll go climbing in Squamish next summer, but I'd like also to go somewhere else.
Which are the places that an european must visit?

Cheers,
patrick

Heading up the the Vampire Spires myself later this summer. The Bugs are a great idea as it's a hell of a lot cheaper to get there than the Vamps or the Cirque. If you can afford the Cirque go for it. If the Vamps interest you, wait until we leave ;)

Baffin Island!!

Amazing place. I will be heading out there this summer for a month to experience it and do a little visual recon on Asgard and Thor!

Some mountaineering as well!

Canada is great, so many places to check out!

I agree with whatsupdoc. If you're into trad though you've gotta go to Mount Yamnuska (~500 hundred metres of cliff, numerous routes of varying grades, all trad I think, 200m metre scree run descent, nice view). Yam is the first mountain along highway 1 when driving from Calgary to Banff.

Allright , Id say the bugaboos and Baffin Islands are very well and good, but they take along time, so if you are here for a few weeks, Baffin Island is probably out of the question, and the Bugaboos, would significantly eat at your vacation time.

How long are you here? what is your budget? and what are your goals?

By goals I mean, do you want to see cultrual things? Climb the biggest hardest alpine climbs? Multipitch Trad on (biggish) Walls? Sport climbs on Limestone? See things that you don't see in Europe (buffalo, grizzlie bears, praries)?

There is so much to see in canada, and it takes along time, or alot of money to travel across it.

Biff has it right - you really need to add a lot more info as to what your interested in and what your constraints are. You do realize that Canada is as big as Europe? If I posed you the question "I am going to be in Verdon this summer - what else should I do in Europe?" how would you respond?

It's actually a bit bigger then Europe... Add to that, that most of Northern Canada is har to reach (like Baffin Island), you could end up with a very expensive trip!

My two cents, if you're out west (Squamish), go to the Boogaboos, Skaha, Lake Louise and Yamnuska.

Most important, have fun!

Just to illustrate how expensive ventureing to northern Canada is. Three of us are heading to the Vampire Spires (15 miles north of the Cirque) for 28 days. Our total budget for the trip is over $11,000. We got shot down on all grant applications and have recieved very minimal sponsorship (Misty is kicking a pro-deal but it ends there).

Plane tickets from Vancouver to Whitehorse, YT total $1100. The transportation from Whitehorse to the Vampire Spires (and back) total $5600. The infamous Warren LaFave will only fly his chopper in - no more sketchy plane landings on the small lake. Beyond that we've invested $1000 in ropes that we expect to trash, toss in some food and upgrading of clothing (to go lighter), driving from Flagstaff to Vancouver and we start pushing that $11K mark. All this out of pocket but to us it's more than worth it.

I'd work it like this: arrive in Squamish, climb 'til the weather craps out(it always does on the coast), then take Hwy. 3 to Skaha(Pentiction) and do some amazing face climbing at my favorite cragging area ever until the weateher improves. Then moter out to the Kootney's and turn North up the Slocan Valley just south of Nelson. Climb the S. Ridge of Gimli in the Valhalla, plus other classics in the Valhalla's. Then when the weather get's bad(it always does in the interior), motor on up to Revelstoke and crag a bit a Begbie Bluffs. Then, when it clears up, head up to Roger's Pass and bag th NW ridge of Sir Donald. Then, when the weather get's bad, (it always does in the Selkirks), motor up to Lake Louise and drink coffee at Laggins and crag on the beautiful quartzite at the back of the Lake, in one of the most scenic cragging spots on the continent. Then, when the weather clears up, bag some classic Rockies line, like Brewer's on Castle, or Mt. Victoria if your into snow and ice. Then, when the weather craps out, (it always does in the Rockies), head south through Kootney Park down to the Bugs. After you bag some classics in the premire alpine climbing venue on the continent and the weather craps out(it always does in the Purcells) get back to Skaha to de-tune from the scary alpine with some superb, well protected face climbing at the area with the best weather in B.C. Then, when it get's too hot in Skaha(it always does in the Okanagan), get back out to Squamish to complete the circle. Hope that helps.

I would say you should definitely come to newfoundland. It is really starting to get established. Pasadena, St. John's, Steady Brook, and some other places have some very good climbs.

I just noticed in one of your other posts that you will be here for just over 2 weeks (July 25 to august 14th), and starting out in squamish.

Then If I were you, I would go with Micronuts plan, but you might not get to the Bugaboos, and Skaha might be too hot for you.

Do some bouldering / climbing around Squamish, then head to Banff/Lake louise / Calgary, then back to vancouver if your flight leaves from there. Depending on the weather / fires you could get some climbing in at Skaha. If you could change your flight to leave from Calgary, then that would save you the 10 hour drive back to Vancouver.

Hey, they really want you to see their entire country. Can't really comment on the East coast, but if you are used to Europe for rockclimbing forget everything but perhaps the Bugaboos. Scratch your ticket and come in winter for the ammazing ice and mixed stuff in the bow-valley/banf/Jasper corridor.
But for a fun holiday Sqamish and the areas north should be just fine. Remember Canadians are totally INSENSITIVE to driving distances. Vancouver-Canmore is like 11oo km. So the proposed round trip baove would be like 3000 km probably. Thats like Munich-Gibraltar and back w/o detour. what doses that leave for climbing?
So have fun there (BTW acephale is a good cliff too, sport-wise)
