Hi all. Could some of you recommend a good sport doctor to me in a Vancouver area ? Thank you very much.

I'm feeling this weird numbness in my right leg, also a pain that starts in lower back and then it "goes" to my leg. One night I woke up around 4 am because I felt this weird pain like someone was poking me with needles but it was from the inside of my right leg. When I drive I have moments when my legs are "on fire" Those would be a few symptoms that I'm experiencing in the last 3-4 months.

That sounds a little odd. Don't know any docs out there, but I've found that when looking for a good sports Doc in a given area it doesn't hurt to contact the Athletics department at the University and ask who they would recommend. I'm sure there are a lot of good sports oriented Doc's in the Vancouver area given the location. Hope you figure whatever it is out.

I don't know any sports doctors in terms of what you're probably asking for, but I do know a Chiropractor that is also a climber and she is supposed to be really good. It would depend on what the actual cause of the pain is I suppose. Dr. Carla Cupido
In reply to: When I threw my back out, Dr. Cupido was able to use her expertise to diagnose exactly what I had done and not only gave me the required treatment; but, also prescribed numerous specific exercises and explained how to do them properly to help get me back on my feet and climbing as soon as possible. I thought you said you were going to the doctor already this week? Or is this something different?

Yes, but I figured it would be better to see a sport doctor that has a clue about climbing and/or sport injuries.

When it was apparent that I had a disc hernia, I stopped with the chiropractic adjustments. Numbness, tingling, and shooting pains down the leg may all point towards nerve damage caused from a slipped disc. Best to get it checked out.

Get an MRI of your low back to get a visual confirmation of disc herniation. An EMG will also help discover the degree of nerve damage (if any) to the leg and/or spine. Best of luck. Take it easy on the climbing (I had to stop altogether until recently) and don't lift anything heavy.

A couple suggestions for you. Firstly, UBC has an excellent Sport Med. center. If you can get a referral this would be a reasonable choice but the wait times can be very long. I would also consider calling Dr. Rui Avalar. He should be up by 49th and Oak St.(at least he used to be) and I would think you could get in without a referral. Rui is a very straight shooter and i always liked that in a Dr.
