Going to be in Vernon for a few days and looking for places to climb. Found Ellison Park http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/ellison.htm#climbing is it worth it?

Ellison park is a lot of fun and totally worth going to, especially in the summer as it is on the lake, their are some good routes their on nice granite, (see the topos written by Aaron they are posted under the routes section of ellison park on this website)but the climbing is limited. The routes in ellison vary from 5.6 cracks to overhanging 5.12 sport routes. Vernon also has a crag called couger canyon that has well over a hundred routes. Everything from trad to sport on gneiss(some routes up to 3 pitches). The guide book is available in valhalla or far west.

The best thing about ellison is the boulder traverse right near the water. It's tons of fun, cool holds and the lake right there. Not on the main beach but just around the point (south I believe, haven't been there since '94 when skaha was burning).

There's a 10d sport called slabadabadoo that's well worth falling off. The 5.7 trad line up the corner to the right was great fun too. My friends and I have tried to use a couple different topos to find Cougar crag without success. Find a local to take you up there or set aside a day to get lost in the woods. W

Begbie Bluffs in Revelstoke might be worth the drive. Good little sport crag. There is a new Revelstoke guide book, you should be able to get it in town if you go. Cheers, DOTC

Cougar was hard to find. I spent the hike in trying to figure out which fork to take and how long I should hike before considering myself lost... then BOOM, I was at some good looking rock. My advice is to pop on the trail, rock-paper-scissors the navigation and hope for the best. Begbie is great too - much easier to find your way, lots of routes + lots of climbing partners. :)
