Hi there. I'd love to bring you around to the different climbing spots but unfortunately I'm overseas, and will be till the end of Aug. In my opinion the best climbing gym in MTL is called "Alle up". it has the best (and also some of toughest) routes in mtl. don't be surprised of you hop on one of their 5.8's and think "this MUST be a 5.9+" the ratings there are a little sand bagged. It's near the DT area, take the green line to Charlevoix metro station, walk up centre street till St. Patrick, take a left, then it's at the end of the street (call them to confirm these directions.) Another Gym to climb which I hear is quite good it Horizon Roc, never been there though. Outside, there are some places in the RC.com data base. The main spots are Rigault (Highway 20 West, about 1 hour from dt, get off at the Rigault exit, into the village, second set of lights take a left (or ask for the Mt Rigault ski hill). The other option, much bigger higher and better is Val David. Ask the staff at a local gym for directions on how to get there. hope that helps. mail me if you need more info Scott@IRINNEWS.org

Hi All, Just got back from a 6 day climbing tour of Quebec. We hit Mount Rigaud on the last day and loved it. We were bummed that we had to leave. Val David was on our list as well. We did a bunch of bouldering in "Les Dammes" area as well as some top Roping on Mt. King and Mt. Ceasare. We are a bunch of beginners, but we found the climbs to be a lot of fun and we would definitley go back. If I had a choice, I would spend some extra time at Mt. Rigaud. We found all the info for these places on this web site - check out the Canada Link on the main page. Have fun

I was up there over the July 4th weekend. Did some fun sport climbing at Montagne D'Argent. Nice place about an hour and a half outside the city. It also has trad routes. Mt Rigaud was another fun spot.

Bonjour! I agree, Allez Up is the best gym to climb in Montreal. Climbers and employees are cool! (that's where I train ;-)) You can easily find a partner there... If you want to climb outside, there is Val David, Montagne d'Argent, Weir and Mt. Orford, which is a beauty (and much better than Rigaud). All places are about an hour and a half drive from Montreal. Take a look at www.drtopo.com/quebec/ There are numerous biking routes in and around the city. For exemple, in the Laurentians (Petit train du Nord), in the Eastern Townships, Chambly, Bromont, Yamaska Park... all within an hour drive or so from Montreal. Take a look at http://www.canadatrails.ca/biking/bike_qc.html OR http://www.out-there.com/mtb_pq.htm I may be around in the last week of July, maybe we could climb at the gym or outside... Post reply! Have fun while in Montreal. It is a GREAT city! carioca

Hey! I live in Mtl and climb every weekends. Our gang is quite open to have new climbers come along. Carioca has expressed quite well the areas and THE good gym in the city. All depends on what type of climbing you want to do and how strong of a climber you are. For instance, Weir has very solid climbs and not much easy stuff. This being said, if you come at Allez-up on any Tuesday or Thursday (from 5pm), you'll have me, or someone from my gang to belay you. Depending on your date of arrival and departure, you might even come with us outside. You might want to check http://www.escaladequebec.com for some images of the crags in the Mtl area. Finally, Allez-up gym website is: http://www.allezup.com/. You'll find the address and hours of access. Yes, the climbs are a bit sandbag, but hey, if you can climb 5.10 at Allez-up, you can climb 5.11 anywhere in the world! Have fun, enjoy the city and it's people! e_wire

Wow, no mention of some of the best climbing areas around. It's summer man, why go to a sweaty stinky gym when you can get out and enjoy the awesome climbing that the MTL area has to offer? Awesome face climbing, fantastic cracks and some great multi-pitch routes all within one to three hours' drive. There's Weir, Cap des Pere, Val David, Mont Orford, Montagne D'Argent, Nixon in the surrounding areas, and just an hour and a half's drive south in NY State there's some amazing multi-pitch routes and fantastic cracks at Poke-o-Moonshine, Spider's Webb, the Beer Walls, Willsborough (on the shores of lake Champlain, great for a climb/swim day) and many others. The possiblities outdoors around here are limitless. Enjoy it. If you need info or directions or just an overview of what's out there, drop me a line. BS

Hey! Read a bit higher, Carioca's reply had plenty of mention on the crags around the MTL area... Some where missing, Poko for instance! Why go in a Gym in summer? Because some of us work during the week and still want to keep in some osrt of climbing shape! e_wire

Yup, Allez-Up is the BEST gym in Montreal, and I have the longest and thickest schlong in town. How to tell? Because I say so on an Internet forum. So there. Honest, though, I hope AU survives; the atmosphere there is really great. Maybe one day they'll have more than only one route-setter. What's nice is that, once you figure out how to get there, it's got a great location. However, for a lot of visitors, anything south of the canal is complicated to find.

I like Allez Up as well, and there are improvements on the way. They now have more route setters, and there are plans to build a bouldering section. Was anyone there for the bouldering comp in the spring? That was sick. Everyone has covered the outdoor crags I know about, except for Ile-St-Helene, which is more a highballs bouldering area. There are bolts on top for top rope, but the lines are mostly easy enough to just solo them. Nasty falls if you bailed from near the top though. Your brother can find lots of distractions in Montreal any day of the week. If you want to hit Allez up on mondays, it's ladies night, and I'm sure your brother would have fun seeing the local girls in action. Peace, Nik
