DTA has everything, short sport climbing and trad, long stuff, alpine and great ice. The boys at COE is doing a lot of work around there for the last 10 years or so. One thing is that from Edmonton everything is a min 4 hour drive and to Canmore it is 5
Hey! Nordegg is 3 hrs door to door from St Albert (just N of Edmonton) depending on how you drive When I get back to town maybe I'll hook up as I really need to get out more...
That Anthony Henday dr must really speed stuff up but its still a haul. And the climbing is another 30 min away from Nordegg and the wind has to be just right you have to admit that Edmonton sucks for climbing
As I am sitting in squamish right now where the climbing is not only endless and continually insight no matter where you wander but the approaches are as small as 10 ft from the truck and there are freaking signs labeling the freaking crags... yah I have to admit it sucks big time. (I think I'm in love and I'm calculating the value of my house as I speak...sigh) But you do what ya can.
And there is a new face about 4 minutes out from the hostel at Nordegg called the Darkside... not too big yet but lots o' potential.
Sure edmonton sucks in terms of being far -- but at least we're almost equal distance to all three main areas in Alberta -- jasper, nordegg, and canmore are all within 4 hours...give or take 30 minutes (and of course, multiple tim hortons stops).
btw, i think one of the best places to climb in nordegg is the Dark Side, which is actually EAST of nordegg (only barely, but still...). It's only around 300 km from my doorstep. Absolutely outstanding climbs out there.
i've made the 4 hour drive faithfully every weekend (except two) this summer, and after that much driving i'm pretty used to it.
But to stay on topic to this thread, i'll probably be looking for climbing partners come september, cause my current buddies are scattering around the world or else back to school...
