I'm going to be in Pawtuckaway on the 23rd, which is after camping in the park closes, and I need a place to roll out a bivi sack. Anyone know where I can camp near Pawtuckaway?

Ah......Hello....(sound of echo in dead space)anyone out there? If I'm hosed, please tell me. I'm used to Arizona, where you can camp just about anywhere.

There is a campground in Raymond on RT 102 that is open year round. I forget the name of it and i have never stayed their. This will put you about 10 min from the park.

Perhaps unneeded, but two suggestions:

There's an excellent bouldering guidebook to the park, worth picking up for planning before you fly. If you don't have this, I can look up the ref.

Nobody would want to camp out there today (Nor'easter blowing through). If camping seems unattractive when you come by, there are a scattering of non-chain, low-cost motels along Route 4 between Concord and Durham, within 20 minutes or less of the Pawtuckaway trailhead (where you should definitely not camp, homeowners call cops).

Hey Jim... our house is open to any climber or climbers visiting the area. We have a spare bedroom with a bunkbed and are about 30 minutes from Pawtuckaway.

I have the bouldering guide available for loan and might be tempted to take the day off.

Send me a pm if you're interested.

PS- You have to return the favor when we head to AZ in March. :-)

Oh and you shouldn't encounter many hostiles in NH. They live somewhere else.

BTW, your original post mentioned a drive along the Kancamagus Highway, which is 1.5 hours from Pawtuckaway but has nice scenery, climbing, and several of the best National Forest campgrounds in the state. Though Pawtuckaway has a better concentration of boulders.

And fortunately, you'll be here before the main deer-hunting season (though archery and waterfowl are on). Things can get a little hairy in the woods at that time.

I'm bailing on the Kanka-whatever highway. I've been warned off of taking that route anytime but in summer by a former native. Remember, I'm from 'Zona and am not used to snow, rain, twisty narrow roads, turning leaves.....

The former native gave you too-cautious beta, IMO. The Kanc is open and popular all winter; in October it's the kind of cruise that people take their classic cars and convertibles on (if sunny). On weekends this month it's way crowded, but that's for good reason. Anyone used to Rockies 2-lanes would find the Kanc simple -- this is "mountain driving" only by East Coast standards. I doubt you'd be troubled by snow or ice unless it's actually storming at the time. But that's a call you can make "on the road." Are you coming in on I-89 or I-93?

I'll be rolling down I-89 out of Montpilier. Originally I was going to hit Rumney but several people advised me that P-Way was the better bouldering area. Since I-89 is a direct shot, I decided to go that route. I'm looking to pick up the P-Way guide in Burlington (I hope they have it)
After P-Way I'm heading up to the Camden ME area to mooch off a friend for a day or so. There's boulders in them thar hills, also...

There is a link here that will let you order the Pawtuckaway guidebook online, in case that appeals:
http://www.climbnh.com/

You're right that Pawtuckaway has the best-developed bouldering in the state. Lots of short toproping opportunities as well; big boulders and small walls. It's a straight shot from I-89 to Rt. 4 to the park.

Kanganmangus Alert! - Although there are several great crags off the Kank - it is my sad duty to inform you to be very careful where you park your car at night. Sleep next to it if at all possible. Why you ask?? In 1999, I was parked at a spot I had been going to for years and during a heavy snowstorm, sometime between 11pm and 6am, my Toyota was broken into, vandalized (car totaled), gear stolen, everything smashed, broken, or missing. Came out of the woods to find my car gone - been towed cause they thought it had been abandoned. I am sure this was not done by climbers but it can happen to you. The money thing was fixed by insurance after losing a $1000 deductable but my karma level was deeply affected by these hoodlums. Be very careful!
