I am new to the city and I want to leave...to go climbing. I'm also up for biking (mtn or road, I'm itchin' for either), hiking, exploring, whatever as long as it involves getting outside and seeing something new. I'm stuck without a car and the metro only takes me so far. If you don't have wheels, at least we could join forces and rent soemthing.

Look in the DC section, there is some bouldering in Rock Creek Park supposedly. Come warmer weather and the time change ill be going to great falls and carderock after work, you can meet me at the virginia square metro and go if you like. Also check this out the nelson rocks/seneca event coming in march

Also you should think about coming to the Seneca/Nelson Rocks gathering in March. I usually go up to Old Rag (rock) or White Oak Canyon (ice) during the winter, yesterday the ice was in pretty nicely. Normally I announce my evil intentions to the mailing list sometime during the week, as do other people planning trips, so you can pick and choose what you want to do, even if it's just going to SportRock or Earth Treks for a day.

Check it out.

Thanks for the ideas folks, keep 'em coming. I have been to the mysterious Rock Creek bouldering location. It takes a while to find but there are a few hours of fun to be had if the rock is dry. I've also been out to Great Falls a couple times but didn't have a climbing partner. jerrygarcia, I might take you up on your offer and I'm definitly thinking about the Seneca trip in March.

Hello, I am new in the city, just starting college here, and I am going into climbing withdrawal(shrinking arms, looking for routes on buildings, grabbing anything that looks remotely like a hold) Anyways, I was just looking for some good areas, advice and/or partners for 5.10 climbing or bouldering. (preferably bouldering)
Thanks a bunch!

SportRock II (Alexandria) is very "metro-accesisble" (go to Van Dorn station - exit on Eisenhower Blvd and go right about two driveways ... the gym is in the bldg with the tall part - door is up ramp)... they have a bulletin board you can post looking for partners... Great Falls and Carderock are NOT easily accessible - but you can catch a ride from some gym climbers I'm sure!!

Good luck!

Hey,
I know there are some good mountain biking trails in the darnestownish area like chaffer and seneca. i could give you more info if you PM me. Also, like the others said, Great Falls and Carderock are both close to D.C. Sportrock in Rockville is the closest climbing gym to D.C. i believe. i'm a member there. I live near the White Flint metro stop and would always be happy to give you a ride to go climbing indoors and outdoors when i go. let me know.

Results The Gym on 3rd and G streets SE also has a climbing wall. It's nowhere near the size that EarthTreks or SportRock are, but on the other hand they finally hired someone to set routes (again -- they pissed off the guy who originally set the wall up) and it's picking up some steam again.

It's not huge, but it's not pathetic like most gyms' walls, either. Autobelay setup, and we're working on getting them to re-recognize that leading is permitted under the waiver (this was a done deal, but then they pissed Chuck off and pretty much everything related to the wall went to hell for a while).

If you're near Capitol Hill it's definitely worth looking into. Tuesdays and Thursday nights seem to be congealing as the days for the 'scene' there.

Hey, a gym is a gym...
