I am new to the midwest and currently living near Minneapolis. I am looking for some info on the Blue Mounds climbing area. I have noticed that the local Falcon guide book does not list many crag heights. I have already enjoyed time at Taylors Falls and am wondering if the dirve to the Blue Mounds is worth the gas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's a relevant thread on this site: http://minnesotaclimbing.com/ Curt

The highest climb at Blue Mounds might be around 45 feet, if that, in the prairie walls area. Most climbs are around 30-40 feet and in the woods they are often around 20-25 feet. If you're not familiar with it, the rock is Sioux quartzite which is very slick. Most people toprope it with a small number daring enough to place gear. There are no bolted routes or anchors. Bring plenty of webbing because natural anchors an pro placements are often 10-25 feet back from the edge. Nuts and hexes usually work great as pro, but bring cams because of some awkward/limited placements. Access to the top is no problem. I went to the Minnesota Climbing Club event and had a pretty good time. However, any nice weekend usually turns out some pretty friendly "regulars" who are often willing to let you jump on a rope.
