http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~viningjc/wall1.jpg Here at Purdue University where everything is flat except buildings, this is how we keep ourselves climbing legally. I know its not big, but it's definately better than nothing and for a dorm room its not too shabby. We usually climb at least 3 days a week and often times alot more, continually changing the routes. It hasn't really improved our endurance at all but we are definately starting to send some harder bouldering problems. If you would like more details about it or want to come climb with us feel free to email me at viningjc@purdue.edu Justin Oh yeah, for holds, I would definately get some from So Ill you cannot go wrong with them!

Having a little gym in your dorm room would be quite a challenge, some dude on the site posted up some images of his full-featured dorm gym some time ago (where did those go....hmm). I suggest investing in a hangboard or such, and mounting it or lashing it to the top bunk or loft (if you have such things). A campus board wouldn't be too hard to make and have in a dorm room either. But for a full wall, good luck.

i have an 8x8 woodie in my room set at a 45 degree angle with a 1 1/2 kicker panel at the bottom. it is full free standing and doubles as my loft as well as a huge storage space, i have a bunch of boxes as well as a couple bikes back there. my room has 10 foot ceilings but it would fit in an 8 foot room minus the hang board. if you are swinging through madison you can come see it and hoofers_andy lives in the same building so you can see his room too. i have drawings on CAD too but i only have hard copies or else i'd send them. i'll post a picture soon. let me know if you have any questions.

A few years ago in Climbing or R & I there was a picture and description of a small freestanding wall that this dude had built in a dorm room. I think it was only around 4 feet wide and had a hangboard at the top and campus rungs up it. I could try to find it and scan it if you want it.

If your dorm is like most and made of pastel painted cinderblock wall, just chisel and chip some pockets and features into the blocks and climb away! Be sure to crank your 10,000 W dorm stereo up to "11" to cover the sound of you wailing away with the hammer and chisel. Beware the ever watchful R.A. - Hide the fragments of brick and dust in little bags sewn into your pants and transport them down to the quad for stealthy dumping. At the end of the year, fill in the pockets with toothpaste before you move out - just be sure to buy and/or mix the correct brands of toothpaste to match the color of the paint on the wall.

Thanks for the props but it was all my buddies idea and he pretty much did all of the painting, I was just moral support. Someone mentioned the RA issue... Well it's mighty nice when your the RA, now the only thing I have to worry about is the fire department. I don't know about you guys at other schools who have also pulled off the dorm woodies but in our residence hall guidebook there is a rule clearly stated that false walls are not permitted. Any of you other guys experience a rule like this and have to pull a few strings to make your walls?

my woody is also a loft and since it doesn't go all the way to the ceiling it isn't a false wall. i like to think of it as a really large piece of furniture. i am an RA too which allows me to have such a monstrosity, plus my room has 10 foot ceilings :P

Yeah, the rubber has built up pretty quickly but surprisingly it does not show up as much as you would think. All in all I think its worth it to have a festive wall instead of just plain wood.

Brian, Andy, Phil, viningjc, and everyone else, thanks for the input, and once its built you all can pull down for free. I mean, it may not compare to the Goldberg Gym... or the Easter Island wall, but hey it will be sweet nonetheless. RACH
