I was down last year mid-February and Miguel's was still closed. I'll probably be back again this Feb. and will stay at the Lodge 'cause it's too damn cold to camp!

Miguel's opens the first weekend in March.. depending on who all is there. I think he waited till that Saturday/Sunday to open the shop up. He came down in the mornings to open the front door and let us frozen climbers eat our breakfast inside his warm warm warm pizza shop. Very nice of him. He also cooked us some pizzas with what little toppings he had at the time. He was not prepared for so many climbers that early in March. The water will be shut off however so plan accordingly. I think he ran a garden hose from inside his pizza shop out to the sinks out back. So that might be handy. It is very cold in early March.. we had 1 very nice day, warm, etc. Then got drunk around the fire with abunch of Frenchies from Canada only to wake up the next morning as ice cubes. Andy

Miguelis the BEST pizza thrower out there! His shop is located in the Red River Gorge, KY. I wait all winter until he opens up then I gorge myself like mad! It is worth the wait.

The red has awesome Sport and Trad climbs! the highlight being the superb sport climbs, as described by many as steep jug hauling on sick sandstone. It also has many way cool splitter crack climbs. and other trad stuff. Climbing Mag, rated it one of the best crag climbing areas in America.

In the published guide book, there were 97 crags now there are definitely more! So between sport & trad there are by now well over 1,200 routes. So your options certainly vary. Needless to say we only have a small range of easy sport ~10 but the options open alot more in the trad lines. And on the hard side of things, there are several 14's; huge variety of 12's & 13's. So we have pretty much covered the basis on a well developed multi-faceted climbing destination, not to mention the location itself. The Daniel Boone National Forest is BEAUTIFUL! THere is so much in the way of recreation and education. If you have yet to travel to our parts, please visit the Red River Gorge Climber's Coalition website, http://www.rrgcc.org and please familiarize yourself with current issues. Play hard and be a responsible recreationist!

It costs $2/night to stay at Miguel's, although I usually spring him some extra cash because he is so good to climbers. As far as the campgroud down the road with showers, don't stay there. It is $10/night and I have stayed there in the past. The families that stay there are incredibly loud. If one campsite wakes up, all the others are forced to wake also because of the extreme noise. Climbers at Miguel's are much more curdious, especailly in the mornings!

The Red sucks. Don't come here. People only climb here for Miguel's pizza. Go to the gunks. I hear New York pizza isn't bad either.

I'll be coming down to the gorge with a group of 15-25 for spring break between March 17th -21st. Most of the group will be with a guide. I am looking to go do some other routes. Some sport or trad. I have a full trad rack and a rope. I climb between 5.7 and 5.9 on average in the gym and I have outdoor experience at Red Rocks, NV, Vedawoo, WY and Devils Lake, WI. We'll be the college group freezing in our tents. Does anybody know where I can get a copy of the infamous guide book "Red River Gorge Climbs Second Edition by John H. Bronaugh". I've read at Miguel's, but there does not seem to be an phone number or website. Thanks, Moshe

Hey two threads on the Red, well I'll be there for Easter so this is what I posted in the other.
In reply to: I should be there for the 17th-20th April. Let's see if we can spot the other RC.com'ers around Miguels. Maybe I'll make it easy by colouring my hair yellow or something? I was red last easter, oh and the accent gives me away I'm told. See you there.
