Hi all,

I'm considering moving to Chicago from Pittsburgh for a few months this winter, (Jan, Feb, and March) to spend some time with my G/F before a long road trip, and I was hoping for some advise....

Are there cheap place to rent/sublet for three months?
Any advice on short term work while i'm there?
whats the climbing scene like? I'd like to live close to a gym while there...
Is there ice climbing in the area during the winter? I'd love to learn...

any other advise/tips would be great.

Thanks

Chris

Are there cheap place to rent/sublet for three months? - Check craigslist

Any advice on short term work while i'm there?
- See above

Just gym's in the city and around. There is a list on this site.
Devil's Lake is 3.5ish hours from the city. Trad/TR/bouldering. Though 99% of people up there TR in large groups.
Southern IL is 5ish hours south and great sandstone. Sport/Trad/bouldering
RRG is 8ish hours.

Is there ice climbing in the area during the winter? I'd love to learn...
Yes 1 - 2 (weekends sometimes more) a year at Starved Rock. (No rock climbing there though)

I live in the 'Burbs and work in the Loop. but i'll take a go.

Generally, north of the city and direct south the cost of living is $$$$$

I hear Old Town, Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Bucktown, Lakeview Wrigleyville are the "hip" places to live. I'm sure i'm missing a few.

There is a Gym at the Old Town Fitplex that's small, but the folks that climb are good people. The ones I have met anyway.Smile

Loop, not much at 6PM during the week unless you like theater. They have a really tall wall at the sports complex on Michigan Ave, but it's $$$ for a gym.

There are two groups you might want to check out: Chicago Mountaineering Club and the Chicago Rock Climbing meetup at meetup.com (if you can tolerate that site.) Smile
