If you're looking for something off the beating path, there are a lot of new "areas" along the West Bluff w/ problems that have been unearthed within the past couple of years (not mentioned in the "Get on It" guide). Actually, a few of the areas are even mentioned on here..

If you're going with a good group of spotters and a couple pads, there are quite a few cool problems I've found on the talus fields leading up to the East Bluff, many more are certainly there. Usually, they consist of big overhanging blocks. The landings, of course, are often kinda evil (like I said, group of spotters and pads) but there's quite a bit to be found. Also, the weather might be nicer on the exposed talus field during these winter months.

Bouldering right now will be very difficult at Devil's Lake. Last week we received 7 inches of snow and could get 2 to 4 more tonight. Since the snow fall we have no melting weather so all the top outs are covered. Did some roped climbing this weekend on the east bluff and that was OK but the bouldering looked like a White Christmas.

I would have to agree with ramylson. There are some pretty nice lines along the tumbled rocks trail by the west bluff. You have to be pretty adventurous to find them and I would think any snow would make it pretty hard to get to most of them. Most of them are pretty hard too, a couple of v9's and some other harder problems. Probably some of the best bouldering at the lake though.

thanks for your responses people. i went out today and found some pretty cool stuff! right now im pretty excited. i got to do four solid hours of exploring so it all worked out alright. i found some nice pocketed sandstone problems in a few areas and some other quartzite scattered throughout. im probably going back next week sometime to take pics.

also, i wasnt actually planning on climbing much at all. right now is pretty much the best time to look for new stuff because the snow covers the tops of the boulders. so when you are looking into the woods you can see exactly where the good stuff is. thanks again guys! steve

The Deer hunting season in and around Devil's Lake has been extended until January 3rd. Be aware of whether or not you are in a hunting zone and wear Orange. For example, the old sandstone are is open for hunting. There is some good stuff out there yet to be found. Good luck

There are so many awesome lines out in those Talus fields but most have some pretty bad bone snapping landings. There are exceptions though. I don't think I'd want to wander around the Talus fields in the winter, they are hard enough to negotiate when its dry out.
