I'm a beginner to climbing, i live in the Butte area, and would appreciate some advice on places to climb, and maybe a climbing partner.

There is a guide book on places to climb in Butte. I saw it in PipeStone Mountaineering when I in Missoula a while back. Also, one of the guys in REI in Missoula was telling me about a lot of good climbing around Butte. You might want to stop in and try to catch him. Sorry I don't have his name. There is supposed to be a Pipestone in Butte, but I don't know if they are open anymore. Try: (406)782-4994. I love Butte!!! (But live in PA. ) Have fun. Chuck

I have climbed in Butte before. My girlfriend grew up there. I have climbed Dragon's back off of Homestake pass. It is an interesting aproach to get there (down a steep bank, crossa river over some logs, etc). We also found some boulders off the highway once, but they weren't that great. Dragon's Back was ok, but some routes are mixed climbing so make sure you can see all the bolts unless you have trad gear. Other than that, I don't think there is much else. go to Mulky Gulch about 1.5 hrs away, that place rocks!!! That would be your best bet for climbing around there. BTW, get the falcon guide to MT. It doesnt have all areas, but it has a good amount.
