I'm about to embark on a spring break trip to the flatirons in Boulder, CO and I'm totally stoked, but I don't exactly know what's there. Any suggestions on what/where to climb? what to avoid? bolt safety? etc.?

Any extra info would be awsome.

Sam

You might need to provide a little more info. Are you going with other people? Are you looking for sport routes, trad, bouldering? Although there are bolted climbs, the flatirons are full of easy to moderate trad routes. Runout protection is common.

Here's a good site to start with: http://www.climbingboulder.com
Great site with routes, descriptions, a few opinions, and of course information on seasonal closures for raptors.

If your local climbing shop doesn't have any guidebooks check out Amazon.com or any other large online bookstore. There's a ton of good guidebooks out there. Enjoy.

I agree that you should check out http://www.climbingboulder.com (cause Myke rocks).

Quick overview:
Theres quite a bit of variety in the Boulder area. Eldorado Canyon has lots of classic trad lines and few bolts, the Flatirons have semi-runout slab/face climbing, and Boulder Canyon has some trad and a buncha grid-bolted stuff. A bit further away, you have sport climbing at the Golden cliffs and Clear Creek Canyon, and awesome trad up at Lumpy Ridge/RMNP. And theres some bouldering scattered around as well...

What type/difficulty of climbing are you looking for?

If you're going out particularly for the Flatirons, be aware the the most popular one (3rd Flatiron) as well as many other crags in the area are closed this spring due to raptor nesting. A current list of closures can be found on ClimbingBoulder.com:
http://www.climbingboulder.com/resources/closures/

Even with these closures there are hundreds of other places to climb, but it's something to have in mind as you're planning your trip.

Thanks for the advice. I will probably stick to easy trad, moderate sport, maybe some top roping (if possible) and plenty of bouldering.

How about the weather? What is Boulder like in late march? does it snow or precipitate at all alot? Decent or crappy climbing weather?

The weather can be feast or famine. If it does snow on the front range it usually melts very quickly, especially at North Table Mountain (Golden) If you're going for a week or more you should have at least several good days of weather if not all of them.

Some may disagree with me on this but if it the weather is crap the whole time you're in CO there's some nice indoor gyms you can try. Check out the Spot in Boulder. Never been there but it looks very sweet.

If you want to mainly boulder we have Flagstaff, Mt. Sanitas, and there are a lot of boulders near the flatirons, satallite boulders are probably the most popular. All of those places are right in Boulder. If you drive a little ways you can find some bouldering in Eldorado and some excellent sport climbing in Clear Creek Canyon and Golden CLiffs. The weather has been perfect this past week. Golden CLiffs are south facing so they stay pretty warm, Flagstaff has a bunch of places that stay in the sun pretty well.
