I move to Bend on January 30th. My girlfriend and I are very excited to get out there, but she is still a beginner in the climbing community. She knows basic concepts, but won't be accompanying me for all of my outings. I am interested in finding a partner to explore several of the trad and sport areas as well as anything multipitch at Smith Rock or surrounding areas. I grew up in Tennessee and North Carolina so my climbing is based in committed exposed trad routes, with a lot of sporting mixed in from the Obed river gorge and the classic sport influenced trad crag TWall.
I am a classic 5.8-5.9 trad climber and have broken into 5.10s this fall after much training and more time on the rock.
My other question: Should I bring my ice climbing/mountaineering gear? I wasnt for sure how far Mt. Hood is from Bend, but figured it would be great experience and a lot of fun on mild-moderate terrain.
Please be in touch if you are in need of a consistent partner looking to push into new grades or can shed some light about the mountaineering possibilities within reasonable distance from Bend. Thanks for your help.

Greetings Daniel,
I live in Cornwall, England and normally climb on granite sea cliffs. I have only ever climbed on trad routes, placing my own gear and lead to 5.7/5.8 although I have very occasionally led 5.9 provided I can get a bombproof runner over my head and I am enjoying myself. I will be 65 this April and my wife and I intend to spend the first couple of months of my pension on travelling in California and Oregon and at some time in mid to late April we will be camping at Smith Rock. Sally does not climb but I plan on bringing basic gear on the off chance that I can find someone who does not mind showing an English oldfart a few classic routes. I will have boots, helmet, harness, belay plate, prussic loops and a few screwgates but no lead gear or rope.I have already made contact with a guy named Josh Anderson based in Portland but I have just registered on this site and your post also looks promising. Needless to say I would be only too happy to reciprocate if you should ever visit Cornwall where I have a fair bit of spare gear and ample ropes to accommodate a climber who is travelling light.

PS I should add I am reasonably fit and weigh under 140lbs so I am not hard to catch.
