More Info:
I have been climbing for about eight years and love it. I try to balance my other hobbies like running, biking, racing (running, adventure) kayaking, skiing, snowboarding, basketball, and many more while leaving plenty of time for climbing. I teach Social Studies, Fine Arts, and Outdoor Education at a small alternative high school in Glenwood Springs. I love the area because there is great ice climbing and skiing in the winter and great rock climbing throughout the year. Plus, I'm only 2-1/2 hours from Moab and 7 hours from Zion.
I love all aspects of climbing. I love alpine routes and desert towers and big walls. I love ice and easy mixed stuff. Nothing like swinging tools! I love road tripping. Summer of 2000 I went to Yosemite. Summer of 2001 I hit the West Coast from Bishop to Yosemite to Rainier, then did a Wyoming-Idaho-South Dakota trip. Summer of 2002 I headed East and did the Gunks, Rumney, Pawtuckaway and the Midwest. In 2003 I did a bunch in Zion and RMNP, as well as Yosemite. In 2004 I had a fun trip to the Winds and had a blast at the Needles (CA) and Yosemite. Lately (2005) I've been swinging around on ice and looking forward to spending a good bit of time in Zion this spring.
I grew up in Monticello, Iowa, probably the most popular sport climbing in that area. Our family farm is five minutes from Indian Bluffs. Cool climbing for Iowa, but don't let anyone tell you it's really awesome. It's wet, humid, and cold there more than it's ever comfortable for climbing. My favorite areas are Devils Tower, Zion, the desert in general, the Sierras, the Needles (CA), Colorado National Monument, the Diamond, the Gunks, Shelf Road, City of Rocks, Indian Creek, Yosemite, Rifle, Vail, the Winds, Wild Iris, and many more. There are so many awesome areas out there to explore, that's the great thing about rock climbing, in my opinion.
