[possible spoilers ahead] So I finally saw Black Swan the other day (protip: it is a TERRIBLE date movie), and I liked it, but I kept thinking about its application to climbing. Ever wore shoes so tight you broke a big toenail? Or had your feet start to form webs? Have you ever gotten so up in your head about a climb that you started having psychosexual fantasies about your belayer stabbing herself in the face with a letter opener? Would Arno Ilgner say that her problems stemmed from fear of failure or fear of success? Should she have just read the Rock Warrior's Way?

I have never had a problem with webs, but I have had many "psychosexual fantasies about my belayer stabbing herself with a letter opener." classic!

Decent date movie, maybe, but not the best movie to see with your significant other's parents. Good times

Would Arno Ilgner say that her problems stemmed from fear of failure or fear of success? Should she have just read the Rock Warrior's Way? Wow!! Maybe you should see it again. I don't think you understood it at all. That movie is about Swan Lake and the intensity and pressure a NYCB dancer undergoes during very grueling intense training and competition. It isn't reality , its in the her head. I have a friend of mine who has a daughter currently in the NYCB and have read some interviews by Ashley Boulder who is a well known dancer in the company. Of course there is rivarly and there is pressure to be a prima ballerina. They work very hard and do practice 5 hours a day and take a break for dinner and then have a performance. It is extremely competitive to be chosen to be in the company. my girlfriends daughter practiced from the time she was 7 . Even then they have to fit the ideal standard size. body type, hypermobility, neck , head and of course dance and be able to sustain the rigours involved. I have read quite a bit about those pointe shoes, and how they break them in. Ballet is a graceful expression and quite breathtaking to watch. Perhaps tickets to Lincoln Center may help you see the work of art that is performed on stage. Not a fictional movie It is truly a beautiful work of art, and besides training they also swim and it is major part of their entire life. Those who get chosen are the cream and those who become famous and last long and have solo performances are unbelievable. The movie the "black swan" is just a movie and I thought it was quite good. Natalie Portman will most likely win an oscar. Maybe you have some other issues , thinking about your belayer in such a way. Or are you joking??? As far as climbing, ballet dancers often are good climbers, due to their body type. However the difference is they are part of a company and dance for a performance and entertainment.

In reply to: Maybe you have some other issues , thinking about your belayer in such a way. Or are you joking??? Undoubtedly. But if I can tap into my inner black swan, feathers will sprout from my skin and I will send the Bachar-Yerian. Its pursuit may consume me and everyone I love, but in the end I will achieve... perfection.

Did you even see the movie? I though it was creepy and twisted, but in a good way. Plus, it had a lesbian scene. Now, back to climbing. I DO have fantasies about MY belayer, but rest assured, knives are not involved I am sure there are climbers that are so obsessive that they go off the deep end, a la Natalie Portman. And I have witnessed parents of team kids act very inappropriately, a la the mother in the film. Josh

In the version of The Black Swan that exists in my head, it's all about the budding love affair between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis... and I'm not talking about characters they play in some movie.

The rest was shit. Hillary Swanks have nothing to do with anything. I definately have not had fantasies about my belayer, and I think such behaviour should be avoided at all costs, unless of course it happens to be a comely young she.

I just read a synopsis of the plot, how could that even be considered as having the slightest bit of relevance to rock climbing?

I really liked the lesbain scene, other than that I see no climbing benefit. Nah, my boy's parents. If it were my girl's parents, I can only imagine how much fun those lesbian scenes would have been... His mom thought we should all go out for a movie when we were visiting.
