I was just wondering if anyone knew the rules for state/national forests. Am I allowed to just walk out into the middle of a forest somewhere, set a tent/shelter up and live in the woods for a month? I've been wanting to get away from cell phones/internet/everything and just live in the wild alone. I assume there are rules even out in these woods, like no fires etc... Anyone know where a guy who wants to get away can go to survive in solitude for a while?

NB: You may have to prove that you aren't a hippie as most people who own large tracts of land in the US don;t like to allow people onto them, especially hippies.

If no one checks on you, you can stay longer. Around here, you need a campfire permit, and they will at times ban all fires. Usually when things are dry at the end of summer. Learn how to deal with your waste.

Unless otherwise specified, most Forest Service land around here allows for camping in any one spot up to two weeks with only few restrictions on fire building.

Depending on how far back away from everything, you may be required to get a wilderness permit for a lot of back country backpacking. Least thats the deal here in CA NF's. If you want to get away from everything, and everyone, you might find a non popular area, and it may not be an issue.
