I have a hobby of imagining business ideas, and at one point was thinking about, not a commune(because frankly, I don't like most people enough to have the patience to live in a group setting with them) but more of a hostel setting in which people could barter working at the place for lodging.

Of course I have no money, and such things take money, but that doesn't stop me from having the ideas...

So this idea - a person would have some decent land near a climbing destination. The place would have a bunkhouse type set-up for sleeping, as well as tent/vehicle bivy areas, and perhaps a house with more of a sophisticated B&B scenario.

Also a spa, though not in the commercial sense, but with massage and perhaps some other therapies an outdoors enthusiast might enjoy. And perhaps creative workshops - in playing musical instruments, some crafts, and such.

And a garden - herbs and vegetables. Which would be used for communal dinner prepared by lodgers who were there on a longer term basis, and who had appropriate food service training. Also a veggie stand for the public to purchase from. Perhaps the dining hall would be open for the general public as well.

The place would also have a shuttle service from there to the various climbing destinations and other useful places nearby, to reduce the number of cars going back and forth, if people desired.

Each season, people could apply to come stay there for various lengths of time, and they would form the foundation for the place. They would have free lodging in exchange for a certain level of efforts made on behalf of the place.

Others could come for shorter periods, and perhaps barter some effort for reduced cost in lodging, if available(jobs that would be easy to step into with no training) and others would simply use the place as an interesting community-based place to stay while in the area, but would be paying for whatever services they used(bivy spot/showers/meals/shuttle, etc.).

So - not a commune, but a community centered place.

As for an actual commune for climbers - I don't know of any, but you might search the directory here - http://www.ic.org/ and see if there is anything that you might find appealing.

I met a guy once who would go on about Earthhaven In NC( http://directory.ic.org/...Earthaven_Ecovillage. I don't know anything about the place, but it seemed intriguing, for the type who is intrigued by such things.

I've been living in a communal house for a while now and I'll actually be leaving at the end of the month. I can't wait.
