Hello RC.com! Sorry I haven't been around much lately, but I have a good reason. I spent the winter writing a non-fiction book on the history of whitewater rafting on the New & Gauley Rivers, tentatively titled Come On In, the Water's Weird. My deadline isn't until 4/15, but I just finished a rough draft, and I thought some of you folks who are into whitewater might enjoy a little excerpt. Click here: Come On In, the Water's Weird, and if you like what you read, be sure to check out some of the other links in the post. They're similar. Cheers! J

Still unfinished. But jeez, can't I be excused to complete a whole other book?!

Here's a little more, including audio of Congressman Nick Rahall (D-WV) speaking about whitewater pioneer, Jon Dragan, and first-descent photos of Gauley River rapids you've probably never seen before. Aaannnnd... here are a couple shots from a batteau reenactment in 2004. Members of the Virginia Canal Society (with help from the NPS) launched this big baby to celebrate the anniversary of C.P. Huntington's survey expedition, which ultimately led to the railroad running through the gorge. That railroad in turn opened the entire Gorge up for settlement and coal mining, and NRG coal in large part powered the industrial revolution. Ironically, Huntington's trip probably spelled the end of boat traffic in the Lower New River Gorge until the 1950s, because batteau were viewed as remarkably unsafe. I wonder why.
(Photos courtesy of the national Park System.) That first pic above is Surprise rapid. The second pic, which is (I think) Upper Railroad rapid, is an RC.com exclusive! It will not be in the book! Check the links above for more.

Amazon says the book is out of stock. Have you already sold all four copies?

What? Where does it say that. Looks like it's available now. Orders, not PRE orders! Yay!
