Well I just walking into my parent's living room and my dad was watching the news. Footage of blown out windows all over the place, a flipped car, trashed buildings... Looks like a fucking enormous explosion. Apparently windows were blown out 5 blocks away. Some people are reporting that it was due to a massive car bomb. Police have confirmed that there were fatalities but not how many. I never really expected to see Oslo get attacked like that. Unbelievable.

Very unfortunate. The explosion apparently happened in front of some government offices most likely means (to me) a car bomb. If so, I wonder if this will be followed by a statement for the person or organization responsible for it.

No shit, seems that Norway, and most of Scandinavia for that matter, have been able to stay out of these political matters for the most part.

Looks to me like an attempt on the PM. First a huge bomb near a government office he may have been in, and now this shooting (a single gunman dressed as a cop) at the Labour party youth camp which the PM was meant to be attending. Edit: Maybe not. It seems that the PM was due to visit the camp tomorrow, not today. Today the ex-PM was visiting. 4 people were shot but not killed.

The report I just heard on the radio is that 7 are dead at the youth camp and they expect the total to rise because they are still searching for bodies and some of the current survivors are pretty badly wounded. Early reports (unconfirmed) are that the guy is a native and that it was politically motivated. Truly a fucked up situation and you're right, a total surprise.

The consensus seems to be that he can only be given a max sentence of 21 years. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that. I sure hope there is some provision that allows for an exemption in extreme cases like this.
