I don't normally read the campground so not sure if this is an acceptable post, but thought I would try. I don't want to have to sign upto a "kids vacation" site to ask and I generally trust RC.com opinions.
We live in NJ and have a 1 year old and 2.5 year old. My in-laws will be visiting from Australia for a month in May and we'd like to take a trip (5-7 days) while they are here (or rather I feel obliged to take a trip to make up for our refusal to travel to Aus....). I'd prefer not to fly just based on the hassle, and limit the drive to 6-8 hours. The kids like swiming and beaches, but will anywhere within 6-8 hours from NJ be warm enough for kiddie swimming in May? In-laws are in their 80s so where ever we go needs to be convenient access to amenities.
Anyone have any thoughts? Many thanks! Debra

Go foreign! Come spend your dollars in Canada!
Kingston, Ontario - Home of Confederation. It was the Capital of Canada for a while, until it moved 2 hours north to Ottawa. The old buildings still stand, lots of history, decent sized population (150,000) with all the amenities. Nice hotels, motels, restaurants, parks.
45 Minutes away, you'll find Sandbanks Provincial Park. It's not on the ocean, and the water is pretty shallow, lending itself to being a little warmer and fun for the kiddies. There's a small wine country area nearby and the town of Picton is super quaint, where J-Walkers have the right of way!
Also, there's some climbing, a little bit of bouldering, chossy trad and the shittiest sport you've ever seen. Just don't say anything to the locals, it's all they have and they value it immensely.
If you're down for the 2 hour drive to Ottawa, there's tons of museums and culture to explore with the young and the old too.
Just beware of the "May 2-4" weekend... we can get pretty crazy.

Outer Banks NC. Rent a house on the beach, do some sightseeing. Easy relaxed family vacation and right at that 8 hour range.
I'm going there myself in August. More than 8 hours for me though.
