Oil and Acrylic Painter's Reference Books

So I'm looking to buy some technique and reference painting books (oil and acrylic). I've done a fair amount of research and have narrowed it to these books:

American Artist Guide to Painting Technique by Elizabeth Tate and Hazel Harrison

Color Choices: Making Color Sense Out of Color Theory
by Stephen Quiller

The Artist's Handbook by Ray Smith

I'm also considering Color Mixing Bible... by Ian Sidaway possibly in replace of Quiller's book.

Between the three of the four, I figure I can get a fair amount quick reference info, beginnger-to-intermediate technique advice, and color theory / mixing info.

Does anyone have these books and does anyone have any opinions about them? Consider that I am self-taught and pretty much a beginner, although I have some practice years behind me.

All of these books have a fair amount of good information at first glance. I've flipped through all of them and have taken a fair amount of comparative notes and have a good idea for what each book offers in relation to the other, so I know there is overlap and I know that there isn't. What I don't know is if the info is helpful to me now as a beginner and if I will outgrow it in a matter of months (e.g. - the Ray Smith book has some reviews that suggests it is a good quick reference, but that once someone gets to be an intermediate it quickly loses value).

Anyone out there have any thoughts and advice?

Have you heard of any famous American oil/acrylic artists?
No? Me neither.

That counts the first book out.

ALL are good. ANY ART reference books on color theory and composition are worth their money. I paint as well, PM me and we can talk painting.

Sure, will do. Some books really aren't that great, though. OK, I can't give an opinion of my own, but apparently Blue and Yellow don't make Green by Michael Wilcox isn't worth buying. According to a lot of the reviews I've read he is basing his entire book on disproven color theories (something about the 6-color palette).

So I guess that's more what I'm looking for.

I didn't say they are good. They are all worth it. As a painter I'm sure you've come across mixing issues like the simple ones of a yellow disagreeing with a blue, lol, but aside from that . Using a limited pallet can improve your painting. And I will agree, some books you might wanna see if they are in the local library over spending 50 beens on them .

bump:

adding two books by Simon Jennings:

Artist's Color Manual and The New Artist's Manual

Simon Jennings seems to be very highly regarded.
