hi folks, I might be around Tahoe in late April early May. Is is interesting to back-country ski (wit-h skins ; not off-piste) there. Or elsewhere in NorCal? I've been in CA to hike or climb, but never to ski, so my general knowledge is poor in what CA can offer. But I bet it's huge and good... Any forum / website to get some beta?

www.tahoebackcountry.net is a good resource to start from. The folks over at The Backcountry in Truckee have some great resources, an online guide, an active forum, and can point you towards conditions-good routes. Also there are two established backcountry ski areas in the N. Tahoe region that are mapped. I have spent an absurd amount of time skiing the Mt Rose summit area and find the terrain a happy get away from skiing in the ropes. When you get there ask the guys in the shops about conditions and info, some of the better shops will have maps to the various backcountry areas and the tour routes. Hope this helps!

Yes, this helps a lot! I might be able to ski there, though we just learn that my girlfriend is pregnant... backcountry skiing at 6 months of pregnancy might not be the most cleaver idea for her. I will have a look at the forum.
