State-dependant Learning

Ever wonder why some people can't throw darts or shoot pool worth a damn, but get a few drinks into them in a bar and they become unbeatable?

From Wikipedia:
In reply to:
State-dependent learning (state-dependent memory) is an idea of learning and recalling that is based upon the physiological and mental state of the organism. An example of this effect is transfer-appropriate processing which is a strong positive effect on memory when the type of memorization and the type of recall are similar. An example would be rhyming words out loud and recalling the rhyme out loud.

Factors affecting state-dependent learning may include: environment, intoxication, emotional state, and sensory modality.

In neuropsychopharmacology, state-dependent learning denotes the fact that information that has been learned while the animal is under the influence of a certain drug ("state") can only be recalled and used to solve a task when the animal is in the same state in which the information was learned, but not in a different, i.e., undrugged state.

So basically I am thinking I can bump my climbing up a full grade if I start smoking the scrib again on a daily basis.

Worth a shot, anyway.

That's interesting. I've always wondered why I can't shoot pool sober worth a damn.

3 out 4 Mountain Project users disagree.

Well then, that's reason enough right there.

That explains why back in college I would never have sexed up a fat or ugly girl sober, but get a 12 pack in me...well that's a different story. I still carry some of the shame; luckily, I was drunk for most of them and don't have total recall.

I bet that information came from a government sponsored project.

Do you think that caffeine would cause the same thing?

Give up coffee and all of a sudden you have no idea how to do your work?

It's true.
Take living creature out of its normal state of being and it can get sick.

Just like an extreme change in diet or enviornmental sircumstances.

That is why it is safer to climatize for a few weeks
before committing to a big wall.

Always rushing and the imposing of cruel and unusual regulations can become distracting and dangerous.

Example: Climber #1 wants to climb a new route, but needs a new harness, while trying to rush and do the climb within the time constraints, he dies.

Solution...

If I learned 75% of my current knowlege in the state of New Hampshire, will I be smarter or stupider if I move out west?

Neither. You'd be shot, and dead people are neither smart nor stupid.

I take it back, I'm sure the corpse of Enigma Ceebo-Hoshi is stupider than the average corpse.
