So I had seen a bunch of footage and pictures from the Japanese tsunami, and they were pretty scary, but I just watched a bunch of footage shot as the waves swept in.
Absolutely f*cking terrifying. Just watching as the water rises relentlessly, trashing everything. Houses just being uprooted and floating along and taking out other houses.
Damn.
With all the talk about the nuclear "meltdown", this tsunami has been seriously belittled. With police estimating eighteen thousand people dead, and with the almost-unbelievable property damage, I don't understand why the FP of all the local papers for the last week have been of the powerplant, but the tsunami never really got properly reported. Of course I am running mostly on the shitty newspapers that have been left laying around the UG common room, so maybe other papers have been less sensationalist and report actual news.

Nuclear power scares people. It's less understood and has more myth behind it. The tsunami has come and gone, where as the nuclear contamination is still a looming threat. A threat which has the potential of affecting far greater numbers and for near infinitely longer length than a tsunami; regardless of the reality of that threat. The nuclear issue also has far more fodder for conspiracy theorists. And everyone loves a conspiracy.

There are two stages of lie about this whole thing. The power company is lying to Jap gov and jap gov is lying to their own people. Someone a week ago told me how bad the nuc situation was in japan and US is pulling most key personal out of there. Contamination is slowing reaching US and has shown some traces in California
