I beginning some planning for a trip to Nepal possibly next year, I want to know if anyone has done any treking in and around Everest. I'm definetly a competent climber/hiker/treker but have never done any serious alpine climbing. I'm thinking about hitting Everest Base Camp and the surronding area. Does anyone know any usefull info. Including if it's possible to do it without a guide. I would really rather do it on my own or with a small group of friends. Cheers.

My buddy was there literally a week ago. He was at Everest Base Camp for 2 days. He said he only suffered slight headaches from the altitude, but some people get really sick and can't sleep. He spent 3 weeks trekking around China and Nepal. i can find the guide he used if you are interested.

I'm planning a Trekking visit to Nepal in 2007. I bought the Lonely Planet guidebook for Nepal Himalaya. This guidebook (as opposed to the regular Nepal guidebook) contains all the information for trekking you could possibly want, including several examples of itineraries, time frames, and things to take into consideration. It gives a listing of competent guiding companies and other things, but you don't 'need' to hire a guide company unless its for one of the more difficult, hard to follow trails. The guidebook will tell you which. The trail to Everest base camp can easily be done by yourself, if I remember from my reading. I can't say how well it applies to actually going there, but it seems like it's got what information you're looking for. K.

Lonely Planet has gotten me lost so many times I won't buy it anymore. Try "Let's Go" its better.

Excellent, I had a look through the Nepal LP guide and it was terrible, I didn't know there was a specefic one for the Himalayas, I'll look into that, sounds like what I need.

I'm sure you are already sorted by now, but just thought I'd let you all know there is a new Lonely PLanet Nepal Trekking book out now avaliable. I think it has been updated quite extensively. Or you could have a look on the Lonely Planet Thorntree forum as that has lots of useful information
