okay so on nov 5th i get back to canada to find the water heater has erupted. the dudes come in and replace the water heater. i'm already pissed that they just replaced it in 03. missed the warranty by a year or so. anyhow, the next morning i wake up to water in the basement again. from what i gather this heater gets too fecking hot and the release goes off. I call the plumber but since we're leaving on holidays, i just shut the thing down and deal with it when i get back. the plumber is coming this morning or day depending, the lady at the service desk says she believes it to be a breaker problem, but i think the heater is fucked. breaker means i pay, temp means they do it. this never happened to our old heaters. any opinions.

There's a pressure release valve on the boiler. If the pressure gets to high this open up and drains out. here see the overflow pipe:
If that's what it is, I'd think that wouldn't be linked to the breaker.

that would be my guess. and considering the water is coming out scalding hot, i think the heater is messed up not the breaker but it was the temp guage and water pressure issue coming into the house. just waiting around for parts

Signed, Obvious man. If you've already ruled this out (and god, I HOPE you have) please disregard.

As water heats, it does expand some, a little, and that would increase the pressure. That won't have anything to do with the breaker, even if it was a eletric water heater, it would still be the controls. Good luck.

I'm no expert, but I installed our current heater with only minor difficulties. Electric heater, right? What did you adjust the temp to?

If the plumbers put it in, they should have made sure it was put in & set correctly. If there was too much pressure coming in, they should have dealt with it. If it was set too hot (and Marge, et al. didn't readjust it), they were at fault. Good luck with it though.

macherry wrote: did that but it was the bottom gauge i didn't check, but i also need a new pressure gauge for the water main You may need a new thermostat. (No, not the one in the house running the HVAC.) If the thermostat is broken then it doesn't know that the water is hot enough. It will continue to let the gas/flame heat the water until it pops the release valve, sending water all over the floor. Have your repair guy check and/or replace the thermostat.
