Hi! I'm living in Japan now and I started climbing with some friends... I'll move to West Virginia in March and I'd like to continue climbing. I've never been to a gym, I've only been climbing in the mountains with my friends a few times, so I do not have much experience, but I do enjoy it! I'd like to know if anybody has some advice about gyms and how to get in contact with climbers who would be willing to help a beginner. Thanks a lot!

You are in luck. You will have easy access to the New River Gorge, and Coopers Rock, and Summersville lake witht the Red River Gorge within acouple of hou. These are happy playgrounds with many friendly locals (in my experience anyway).

I think you'll find Charlestown a bit more civilized and palatable, although it's turning into strip mall hell. And I think the poster who said the New and the Red are fairly close had Charlestown confused with Charleston. The Red and the New are actually several hours away from Charlestown. Seneca Rocks, however, is about a 1.5-2 hour drive from C-town, a bit farther from Martinsburg. You'll also have many other recreational opportunities with Monongahela and George Washington National Forersts and Shenandoah National Park less than an hour or 2 away. TS

You're right, I did have them confused. But if you are anywhere in WV, you are closer than I am.

Hi! Thanks for the replies! Troutboy, thanks for giving your opinion about the cities. According to what I found in internet I would have thought Martinsburg could be more "civilized". I thought that Charles Town could be too small (it seems that the population there was less than 3,000 while Martinsburg was 14,000). But anyway I think I wont choose an apartment before I see the place. Do you think I will find a climbing gym around there? Thanks again! Ceci
