I climb often (3-4x/wk), yoga 2x/wk, and have gotten incredibly strong- but I'm bulking up, not leaning out at all. I accept the fact that i have huge shoulders, but would love to slim out since I feel like it would help my climbing immensely. Has this hapenned to any other women, and do you have any sugguestions for leaning down without losing the muscle and strength already acquired?

maybe it's time to ad cardio to you regular exercise routine. When i'm just climbing, or in the winter skiing or gym (weights and strength training) i tend to bulk up. it's not until i resume my road and mountain bike riding, that i get leaner. that being said, since i started climbing, my upper body is broader and that hasn't changed. Same as with skiing, my ass and thighs get bigger because of the muscles being used.

I never lost weight due to climbing. I gained a lot of muscle, and that made me look somewhat doughy until I took my diet and cardio in hand. I only saw leaning out results from incorporating large amounts of cardio (running, cycling) as well as a healthier diet (good lean protein and green leafies). I've still got the same muscles, am the same weight, but look a bit 'leaner' to the natural eye. So no, climbing never slimmed me down at all.

i will second the ladies who've already replied that i generally do NOT slim down when climbing. my body changes shape a bit, if i'm getting winter-doughy, but the only thing thats made me lose weight is cardio, lots of it, and consistently. lots of it, in my case is "long duration" not "high intensity." high intensity sprinting, running or on a bike, is going to just bulk up your thighs more, so what you want is moderate intensity endurance cardio. as far as upper body goes, i've always been slender (my mother used to use the word "waif" in description) and my shoulders broaden and my arms bulk up when i'm climbing regularly. and my waist measurement got bigger, because my obliques now exsist. but i feel so freaking sexy in the summer that i *have* obliques that i dont even care. and, i do climb better lighter, but not at the expense of my shoulders. i climb best when i've been doing a lot of moderate cardio AND climbing regularly, so my muscle weight goes up but my body fat % drops. but even that, i'm only talking about like 5 lbs difference. (or about 4-5% of my total weight lost)

My shoulders get huge. But like the rest of the ladies here, the only time I get lean is when I do lots of cardio. Thankfully I prefer trad days and the approaches here are long and packs are heavy. So, I definitely get my cardio out of it.

thanks all, this has been really helpful... I've started swimming and am going to start running a few times a week- bad knees threaten that, but i'll get the heart pumpin' differnet ways :) much thanks, l.

If you have access to an eliptical machine, that might help. Low-to-no impact. Works for me, anyways. *edit to expand on the the thought...

get some cardio into your regime and modify your diet by removing a few calories while mantaining the protein intake. for an athlete this is easily achievable by reducing the amount of fat you consume. look at your usual diet and you will find many ways to reduce fat, like skimmed milk instead of wholefat, fry the meat in a bit less oil, low fat salad dressing (in a reduced amount) etc.
