Have any of you been lucky enough to have a female mentor - or even a consistent female climbing partner? I'm always climbing with guys, and I feel like I could really learn from a female climber who is stronger than I am. Women's climbing strengths lie in other areas than guys, and I often find I have to "technique" my way through boulder problems that the guys just pull through. Have any of you had a female mentor - and did it help?

I've climbed with very few women, and probably a dozen or so guys. As much as I like climbing with the guys and have found them very helpful, I would like more "women" time and would definitely like a woman mentor. Kate

I am lucky! My mom and little sister started climbing before me and are way more experianced than me. The only bad part is that I don't always like to take my mom's suggestions (I have always been her worst student). Most of the people that we climb with are women. My mom and sister are leaders of a 4-H adventure club, so anytime that we go there are usally a couple extra kids along too. However, my mom and sister learned to climb from men.

I have very rarely climb with other women (i think crazylikeafawkes is about it)...it's usually me and my boyfriend or me and like 5 of his friends. I don't mind because they are all very experienced and i am able to learn some great things from them. but i do wish that i had another female to climb with alot for the social aspect. I mean i can only pretend to scratch my balls, spit and talk about poop for so long. But i do find that i push myself alot harder beacause i am cleaning alot or harder routes. I don't know i guess i am kind of in the middle or the road on this....because i don't have a regular female that i can climb with. if it was possible it would be great. Espcially if we could teach one another stuff, i would enjoy having a mentor or being if the opportunity arose. well...i'll keep look for gals to climb with if not i guess the fellas will do. ~eryn

Since I started climbing a little over two years ago, I have been really fortunate to climb with all kinds of people, from my friend's 12 year old daughter, the 14 and 15 year old girls on our gym's climbing team, who are amazing climbers, a variety of men at the gym and outside, and lots of women. My main climbing partner is a woman who started a year before I did; also Vertical World in Seattle has a women's climbing group that's been getting out on crags, and training in the gym. There are a lot of different experience levels. People tend to be supportive. Every once in a while, someone will be a bit competitive. But generally, we share and sre just available for climbing. if you're ever coming out here, let me know. We can probably always get up a climbing posse!

I used to have a consisten climbing partner (she absolutely rocks) but now she is into running and marathons and has very little time to climb I keep trying to get her back into it but its not quite working... v. sad. So instead I am trying to get all my OTHER girlfriends to climb the person that got me into climbing was a woman and she is amazing, unfortunately I moved away soon after, and, besides... she is much more into triathlon training now... (hmmm see the pattern?) I would LOVE to climb with women who are as into it as I am but I can't seem to find any...
