These are things my midwife told me as I was in a similar boat to you, I too asked about the depo shot again then I was told no you cant have it any way, the keeper scared me a bit??? maybee I'll look into the site next time. Cheers, happy climbing, if in doubt try them all see what works for you.

Try "The Keeper". It does take some getting used to.But is fine after about your second cycle using it, and it can last all day.

I've looked into the keeper but havn't tried it yet. Thought I'd let you know what I have figured out about tampons though: One day I decided to try OB's over all the other tampon styles I had tried over the many years. I was amazed. They have, like, more ridges so they swell up and mold to you better. Then, I thought maybe I'd get fewer of those yucky infections if I tried an honest to goodnes Oragnic Cotton tampon. Praise be to the Almighty. Almighty knew what he/she was doing when he skipped the chemicals. Organic's absorb and absorb. They don't just surface absorb then let the rest slip by if say, you're on pitch 3. This doesn't make them Keepers though. They're just better than the other tampons and worth every extra cent. (cheaper in the long run.)

To the ladies that keep a tampon on for many hours: please check out the label on any tampon box, or a website such as tampax.com for important information. Tampons must be changed at the very least after 8 hours because of the risk of TSS, which is no joke and, even for a healthy young woman, often mortal.

I have a massively baggy pair of climbing/cargo pants I keep just for these special occasions. Just wear an extra tight brightly-colored sports top to detract attention. When camping, I bring a ziplock and cart all my trash home.

I'm gonna have to check out the keeper... One thing I see no one mentioned though was making your body skip a period... if you know you'll be away for a weekend or vacation that normally coincides with your period and you're on the pill... just start a new pack and you'll skip that month's period. The pill must be the kind that provides the same amount of meds each week, not a tri-cycle one. Before anyone jumps on me for playing with my body's natural functions... I'll admit, I use this trick sparingly. I ONLY purposely continue on to the next pack of pills if I'm going back country for a couple days and won't have much sanitation and garbage disposal available. Packing out tampons is gross. My doctor has agreed that this works, although she also says don't do it all the time, you have menses for a reason! And my opinion on tampons... always worked for me, but definitely prefer tampax over any other brand... they leak the least for me. OB leak the most!

has never worked for me. i've tried it with tricyclen, yasmin, & nuvaring--i end up spotting the whole next month. so not worth it. but if it worked...hell yeah, i'd do it. while i'm on the subject of the nuvaring, may i just say that it is the best form of birth control ever. i could never remember to take the pill every day, let alone at the same time. a nuvaring feels much less invasive than injections or semi-permanently inserted devices. can't imagine using anything else.

I think I'll try the organic tampons after reading this thread. But I have to say I just am still grossed out by the Keeper. It sounds like an ok idea, I just don't think I am up for it. Besides, since I had my son my cycle is light and tampons are fine. They never leak, always last, so I'm good.

Wahoo, trust me, it's something you have to work up to. I had to do tampons, then OB, then the keeper. And even then, the first few cycles were icky and scary. It's a damn good thing I'm used to icky stuff on my hands from working on ranches and in vet offices and the like. Nothing a nalgene won't get rid of, and well, it's yours. :) But yeah, organic tampons are a great choice.

Okay, but has anyone delt with the little rubber thing in 0 degree weather? For the entire section of the cycle? Does it hold up to the weather? You can't put it in and completly ignore it.

The Keeper is so the way to go, at least for me. I have had mine for 13 years and I love it! I can't imagine going back to any "other" methods out there! Plus, they have a satisfaction, moneyback guarantee, so you can't go wrong. Try it!

(divacup.com) It sits lower, so there's less 'fishing out' involved. And they'll take it back for up to a year if you're unhappy with it. Just wondering if anyone confirmed what to do when you dump it out in the woods in terms of "Leave No Trace" ethics. Right now, I just kinda dug a small hole with my hands, but wasn't sure if I should be luggin' along the shovel to dig deeper? Thoughts, opinions?

I agree 150%. It is by far the best form of BC I've ever used. Kept forgetting to take the pill. The patch got the nasty band-aid gunk around the edges (ick) or started peeling off...this thing is a gift from heaven. And, just in case anyone is considering trying it, let me just add that it has added a big extra *wow* in the bedroom ;) ...sorry if that's TMI I am intrigued by The Keeper...will have to look into that! One question though. Let's say you are in a public restroom and need to empty it...do you go wash it out in the sink? blech

It's gotta be better than leaving a tampon out there, organic or not. (Though organic would go away as opposed to those rayon combo things.) You don't want to pour it into a ziplock, never trust a ziplock. On the mountains pee bottles are used. Maybe just bring the concept down a few ten thousand feet. We can pack our blood bottles. If you're squatting in the first place, your not worrying about other issues probably. Cover it up at the least.

the diva cup!!!! it is kind of weird to use at first and takes a time or two to get used to it but it is awesome. You have to be comfortable with yourself to use it which i'm sure all ofyouare. it is a reusable cup that you insert that doesnt absorb, but holds the blood, ( sorry for the lack of a more pleasent term) they are good for about ten years and only about $65. considering how much you will use it, and how much you will end up spending on disposables, it is worth it. plus you get less cramps, shorter periods because there is no bleech, and you never have to worry if you ran out of tampons. not to mention, better for the environment. and if you go back packing, all you need is a stream of water to rinse it out in and you are good to go. no need to worry about littering on the trail or carrying a gross baggy. you can get them at lunapads.com

emptying it in a public restroom can be awkward but in the past year i have only had that happen once and i was lucky that no one was there. i dumped it into the tiolet and then kind of cleaned it with toilet paper and hten ran out, rinsed it and back to the stall. it wasnt as bad as it seems. another thing i have done, is keep baby wipes in my purse or bag if i am worried about having to empty it in public. it avoids the hassel of going tot he sink. but in all honesty, i can usually just wait until i get home or to a one toilet bathroom. you can get a little "package" deal which comes with two cloth pads. i usually wear those with the keeper for the first day or two and those help if there is any leakage. i have never had any problem with odor because of the cup. supposedly, it is all of the bleach and artificial material in pads and tampons that mixes with your discharge that creates the scent. if that is false i am sorry. but no, i have never had a problem with odors.

I do like bgraham does, the key is bring baby wipes to clean it up. It never smells. Ever.

I love my Diva cup. One plus for them is the come in pre-baby and post-baby sizes! I have never had a problem with them (except my hubby thinks it's the nastiest thing ever). Just remember to wash it good at the end of your cycle, and let it fully dry. When you are in the bush, and worried about washing it, or your hands.... remember the joys of purel (for your hands), and a little drinking water for the cup. It doesn't need to be spotless if it's going back in! Also, it comes with a cute carry bag!
