"Girls don't grunt"

Last night I was "grunting" to my son, who is a year old and likes to play mimic games when his dad said to him, "Girls aren't supposed to grunt, Mason!"

I looked at him and laughed and said, "You've obviously never heard me climb!" (Which of course he has since he's my main partner)

I started thinking about all of the funny sounds that I make when I climb, especially when I'm at that limit, working the crux and can't think of anything else other than whether I'm going to make it, or whether I'm going to blow off. Usually if I make it, it's a nice grunt of excertion which sounds pretty primal and (dare I say it?) masculine.

If I fall, it's usually a sissy little scream that then turns into a few choice words muttered under my breath. I'm always a little embarrassed by the sissy little scream and since I haven't had the opportunity to climb with any other girls really, I never hear anyone else give out a sissy little scream.

I'd like to hear it.

Who's a screamer?

Who's a grunter?

Who's a drunken sailor?

All of the above.

Which is actually quite embaressing considering I'm making all that noise on a 5.8.

I sometimes try and keep quiet on a route because I know it pisses people off, but the minute I forget about my surroundings I inevitably curse and scream and make animal noises. I think that I'm just a noisy person, in climbing and in other arenas.

I was two steps away from emitting "bzzzaaaatttt!" while playing enduro add-on with a friend the other night (we had added on 15, maybe 20 moves at this point, and I was getting tired).

I used to be more of the drunken sailor type (what do you do with a drunken sailor?) but I think I'm getting more into grunting, and I've even started throwing a few screams in there.

Don't feel too bad kimmyt, I'm the same way..on 5.9s in the gym! :) :) I definitely curse - usually say bloody hell as I am trying to weed the F bomb out of my vocab. It's not terribly ladylike and it does get too vulgar sometimes (just for me I mean..I could care less how much someone else says it).

I also grunt A LOT. I grunt in any physical sport I partake in - tennis, running, lifting & climbing (not yoga..no need there! ;)). Personally I think a person (male or female) pushing him or herself and vocalizing it is terrific. It's a great expression of physical exertion. What's cooler than that??!

I don't usually scream though...sometimes in my head but not outwardly!

unfortunately i started climbing with a girl who was really into vocalizing her frustrations/accomplishments/every move when climbing.

i followed her example and took up swearing profusely every time a move evaded me. i was very loud.

as i matured in my climbing i realized that basically no one else does that, and that it's also quite annoying, be it at the gym or the crag. now i guess i let out the occasional strange sound when i'm trying to pull through something that is at my Absolute Limit.

usually grumble, "arggghhhhhhhhhhhhh" which may lead to an f-bomb and then ultimately leads to giving both fingers (towards the wall)... sometimes i gasp for air when i forget to breath between pulls.

I'm usually silent while climbing, crying while frozen in fear above my last bolt or on a sketchy traverse, or swearing and making excuses after I've fallen or, the most frustrating of all, had to call out 'take'.

I'm a pretty vocal gal most of the time but when I'm bouldering, I try very hard not to be a "drunken sailor" as there are usually families around my favorite area. On the other hand, when I reach the crux and I need to give it a little bit more, I grunt. It's not very loud or obscene sounding but it gives me that extra push that I need. I never thought it was annoying to anybody and truthfully, there are alot of worse things I could do to offend people so I guess I'll stick to grunting.

Ha ha "The F bomb"!

I'm trying not to say that word as well, doesn't seem quite appropriate for me as a mommy. If I have the presence of mind and can catch myself, I'll turn it into

"FAR-FEG-NUGEN!"

Really helps me calm down.

I also do a lot of very serious breathing. Through pursed lips. It's no wonder I go through so much chapstick at the crag.

Ok. Honestly, I swear way more than I would like to when climbing. I am trying hard not to do that anymore.. but by the time I have that thought, i have already finished the last syllable. However, most of the talking I do, most people can't hear unless there is a climber on route next to me. If I am on a tough route that I am having torubles with I often talk myself through it and verbally coach myself through each move. I really find that helps me finish the tougher climbs.

I swear, grunt, and even make expressive large hand gestures while hangdogging.

I don't limit myself to doing this while climbing, either. I was always a grunter as a volleyball player, and have been known to make some rather odd noises on a basketball court. We just won't talk about my word choice, as I tend to say some things that need not be repeated.

Wow, this is such an accurate description of what I did last night at the gym. I'm little scared, blkitty, are you stalking me? :D

Seriously, though, I grunt sometimes when I'm really pushing my limits on a move. Mostly I just exhale loudly (when I'm remembering to breathe, that is). Though I'm all for grunting when it's warranted I'm not a big fan of the meatheads who grunt and shout with every move just to call attention to the fact that they're climbing hard. It's obnoxious and distracting (and potentially dangerous if they do it right when you're reaching tenuously for your next hold). But that's just my personal peeve.

Funny that you should say that because when we first got together, he was in total denial that women pooped. He said he just didn't want to think about it. He had delicate sensibilities I guess.

I gave his delicate sensibilities a big wake up call when I forcefully expelled our son from my womb into the warm tub of water we were both sitting in a year ago.

He's opening his eyes to the century, but rubbing them like the light burns! He's a great guy. I lub him. :D

Yea 'Girls don't grunt'. They swear. And loudly. And a lot.

Speaking for my GF of course! Actually a little funny, she almost never swears in any other situation and at present I am supposed to tell her when she does it on climbs. Especially at the gym with the little kiddies around............

Guilty of most of the above. I'm sure I grunt. And I definitely swear. But only when I'm climbing. My boyfriend had no idea I could curse like a sailor until we did our first multipitch climb together. He was definitely surprised by the foul language. Sometimes I try and let out a shrill, "God Bless America!" instead of the usual F and S bombs but it's usually the latter.

I am so relieved to hear that other women swear. I was worried there for awhile that I was the only one issuing very loud f... at the wall whilst hanging and yes so I swear like a sailor not that I have ever met one but I have been told I do. I am also willing to take all that pent up emotion and throw myself at a climb over and over and over again - I will eventually cheat to get up the f...ing thing if need be - but I will not (unless its a .5 Camelot finger crack at Indian Creek) give up on a climb. And if it happens to be multi-pitch then I will get up it - period. So I personally think all that swearing also can be indicative of a certain amount of willfulness that can come in incredibly handy. By the way several of my climbing partners say I'm better than a porno for sound effects - I only say that because I am going to bet that I am not the only girl out there making those noises and also that grunting/groaning has a lot to do with the amount of tension and exertion we girls put into our climbing. That being said "grunting" then amounts to passionate willfulness that is all about vertical manuvering. Tension and exertion means a little bit of noise that quite frankly if you don't like - go climb with some supercontrolled quiet chick. I make noise but I will get up that climb by G...

I grunt. Or curse. Must remember NOT to curse since it's discouraged in our gym. I grit my teeth. Stop breathing. But I never scream. Or wheeze.

Boy do I grunt and make a lot of noise! I seem to do it more in the gym than out on real rock. When I boulder at the gym, I tend to do a sissy scream as a fall from the top of the problem. On real rock I tend to grunt and breath really loud especially at the crux. I also tend to curse more when I climb than I do when I don't climb.

I like this. Thinking back I do think that some of the noises I make during climbing could be dubbed for the porn.

It's real passion, ya know?
