I have spent the last ten years convincing myself that I would be forever single. That I would never find anyone who would love me enough to want to be with me long-term, let alone find a man that I would want to be with long-term. Funny things happen when you have your life all thought out... A little over a year ago, right here on rc.com, a dialogue began between myself and another member. Conversations were had and plans to climb made. The chemistry wasn't quite instant, but once we both got our heads out of our asses, it was pretty strong. It wasn't always easy either. We even broke-up for a month (some of you might remember me looking to Ladies Room then for a little solace). But as they say, sometimes you have to set free the one you love. And if they come back, well then you've got something real (sometimes.) In our case at least, it was real. Where is all this disjointed rambling going? Well On Saturday November 25, Gunked asked me to marry him. I said yes. Caution: The story of how he proposed, which follows below, is only for the strong of heart...and stomach. Thanks to global warming, it was nearly 60 degrees in Vermont on Saturday. We were at his family's log cabin outside of Killington. We decided to go to a small local crag and get in a route or two. We hike up to the base and there is a nice crew of semi-locals around. Jason prepares to lead this stellar 5.7 finger-crack line. I, as usual, assume my position at the belay. As he moves off the first piece, I notice that there is a little paper tag attached to the first piece. I ask him what the tag is, thinking it was for some gear-organization purpose, but all he has to say is "You'll see." As the sun started to move around to the other side of the cliff, I start to freeze in the shade. I bounce up and down to try and keep warm, mentally trying to motivate Jason to climb faster, partly to warm up and partly to satisfy my curiosity of what all these little tags attached to each piece of gear were about. Finally it is my turn to climb. I quickly put my shoes on and begin to make my way up to the first piece. The tag, which almost blows away in the strong wind says, "You're my friend." I climb up to the next nut "You're my Inspiration." A little farther up the tag says “You’re my lover.” I climb a little higher and remove a #2 cam that has attached to it, “You’re my reason for celebration.” I sink another couple of perfect finger locks and try to smear my feet in oversized shoes and make it to the next piece; “you’re my love.” Nearing the physical crux, I reach higher for the next finger lock and pray my feet don’t fail me and gain the next piece and the next line of the poem- “You’re my partner.” The vertical finger crack starts to peter out and I have to make a big move towards a horizontal fissure that contains a cam with the next line of the poem- “You’re my life.” A few delicate moves on the horizontal hand rail and no feet lead me up to the bolted anchors where the final tag says, “Please be my wife.” I quickly scramble on to the top of the face before I start crying hysterically. I was completely and utterly shocked and amazed. I didn’t see this coming at all and the next thing I know, he is pulling a ring from his pocket. In all my disbelief and through all my tears, I almost forgot to tell him my answer- I said “yes.”

Kinda reminds me of notes I left for a special lass while climbing one day: - brush the lichen off the sloper - clean the dirt out of the finger pocket - dig the pine needles out of the hand crack - tighten the nut so the hanger doesn't spin - blow the dust out of the hole before you sink the bolt - have you seen my spare drill bits? Hmmm...I received a slightly different response at the belay. Congrats & best wishes.

(snip) I, too, am curious about the pics, Climbingbetty. The site actually made me say "AWWWWW" out loud, alone. Very sweet. I am so glad you shared the story for all of us sappy romantic types... like your fiance.

Bless your heart! Congratulations to the both of you - that is absolutely beautiful. He is a terrific guy - a very romantic proposal! (And I did cry BTW but I have PMS and am watching sappy chick flicks so I'm sorta in the mood you know?) And honestly, you have no idea how much I needed some inspiration and hope in that department. Thank you.

Oh, that would be in "Amercican." I'm unfamiliar with it, but it's good to know someone around here is fluent. Where is the  smiley when you really, really need it? Sheesh. Back to your regularly scheduled program! dutch

I don't know what got you (htotsu and clee03m) so upset about "american" comment, I actually thought the same thing. It IS very american to post something like this online, For that matter, a proposal like that is very 'American", too. But it being "american" doesn't stop it from being a beautiful sweet story either.

Maybe it was the "nice story anyway" despite being typical of Americans jist. Or maybe, it's because I find generalizations like that lazy and offensive.
