So I'm trying to convince my fiance to come ice climbing in CO with me this winter and I would like to buy her a new pair of boots as a bit of convincing. Could you lady's help me out with some ideas? We don't need anything super light or technical, we're just climbing beginner ice in Ouray. I'm not really sure what there is out there. Thanks for the help in advance!

anything that fits well. She will freeze if tight so take nice cosy socks to try them on with. I find as a little lady I need far less stiff and heavy boots than my male friends wear. Totally waterproof warm belay gloves and a warm hooded downie, are really important Warm drinks and those pocket warmer things are a good idea too. It's pretty miserable hanging around belaying so spoil her until she's addicted. That Will Gadd ice climbing book has a chapter by a lady which was really interesting, re layering etc have fun

Save yourself a little cash and rent some boots. Most local gear shops will let you demo boots, axes, etc. I know Neptune's here in Boulder does. I understand the plastic boots are warmer.

Is she a climber already (as in a rock climber)? If not then maybe a better introdution to the vertical world might be some rock climbing in a nice warm sunny setting? If she already climbs on rock and is not scared or freaked out by that, then this sounds a great idea, but if not, make sure you don't put her off for life.

She's already experienced on rock, just not ice (yet).

My (now ex) boyfriend took me out to Ouray a few years ago for this exact kind of thing and it was so much fun!! I'm still not much of an ice climber, but I had an awesome time that day. Since I was starting to get into mountaineering too at the time, we went to Neptune Mountaineering before heading over to Ouray and got me some good (and expensive) plastic boots. These are the ones I have: http://www.marmotmountain.com/MMWmain.asp?Option=Detail&StyleID=10007661 They're great boots, and they worked so well for ice climbing!! But if she hasn't gone ice climbing or mountaineering before, I would suggest renting them rather than buying. Or, since I pretty much stick to rock climbing these days, if she happens to be a size 8, I'll sell you mine! ;)

I use the same boots for alpine climbing as for ice climbing (La Sportiva Makalus). My advice would be to get her to try on a few pairs and see what is most comfortable for her.
