Maternity harness recommendations

Hi Ladies,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a (somewhat) comfortable full body harness for climbing during my pregnancy? I have seen the maternity harness on the mountain mama website but they are on back order and don't know when they will get more stock. I am fast growing out of my usual harness and suspect I will need to find another option relatively soon.

Most local climbing stores only stock the usual waist harnesses so I can't easily try on a bunch of full body harnesses and see for myself. Any recommendations on which harness has worked for you, or pregnant friends, would be greatly appreciated! Smile

Thanks!

First of all, congrats!!!

I climbed until I was 7 months. I stopped after that for several reasons, but many women continue up til delivery. You decide whats comfortable for you and your family.

On the harness front, I wore my own harness until probably 5 months. At that point, I actually started wearing my husbands harness. It turned out that it was a bit longer than my own from leg loop to waist belt, and would fit on the top of the baby bump. It was comfy for me. I didn't see the need for the full body harness b/c at that point I also started just TRing climbs, climbs I was very familiar with, and IMO the likelyhood I got flipped or took some kind of crazy fall was next to zip, so a normal harness felt 100% fine for me.

So, until you find what you are looking for, try borrowing a harness from a male friend, and see how it fits.

Best of luck!

I had Camp one. Not padded, but comfortable enough. In my opinion I don't think it is worth spending a whole lot of money on a harness you will use for few months. I hung and did multi pitch in mine.

Thanks for the recommendations and thoughts. A few days after that post, the maternity climbing harness came back into stock so I have ordered one and will see how I go. I have no idea if it will be particularly different/better than a regular full body harness but will see what it's like when it arrives, I guess!

I realise that many women need to stop climbing during some stage of pregnancy, for various reasons (personal, medical etc.). Thankfully, I am still really comfortable going up easier routes and have my OB's approval to continue top roping so I will follow the guidelines set out by my OB and continue to TR for as long as it feels good.

Just for the record - I am not saying anyone else should make similar choices to mine, this is just what my OB, my partner and I are comfortable with.

Thanks again for the advice ladies!

I know its been a while since this forum was moving, but does anyone have a maternity harness they would like to sell or lend for a few months? I have a friend in need and would love to get her one. Thanks!Smile
