So, we are getting married :) Kind of got the order of things a little off, but we will be married way before the baby is born, so no little bastards for me :) Kind of a funny question though. We are shopping for wedding bands right now. I am not one for flashy jewelry, so no engagemetn ring, and I want a band without any stones in it. And matching bands for us. So, do you ladies who wear wedding bands take them off when you climb? I saw a number of peoople just put tape over it (I guess to protect from scratching) and go right on. Does it really work? I'm sentimental about this, so wouldn't want to take my band off ever, but safety always comes first. What do you do?

Take the ring off, I'd be terrified of loosing a finger while wearing it. I have two rings I'll wear, mt wedding band and my iron ring (the ring you get as you graduate from an engineering program in Canada). The vast majority of time they live on a cord around my neck. I put them on today after weeks (months?) of not wearing them because my parent's are visiting. It feels kinda weird to be wearing them....

For your parents? weird. My engagement ring lived on my finger, unless I was going on a climbing binge, then it went on the cord on the neck. Thing was a bitch to get off without soap though, so there were a couple times i got out there and did the "oh shit" and just had to deal. oh, and one time i didn't have a cord and put it in my chalk bag...scary.

What do you do? i wouldn't wear any kind of rings climbing. do a site search for pic of finger that have been "skinned" down to the bone. i don't think you will think twice about wearing a ring

A picture's worth a thousand words. Clausti has a very cool tattoo, if I recollect correctly.

I take my rings off every time I do anything physical, just because I don't want to worry about it. Usually I remember to leave them at home, but if I forget I just put them on a locking biner on my harness or attached to my bag.

but we also got bands for the wedding, and we wear them more than we thought we would. which is still not much, for me, mostly on dates, because i don't wear mine at work (lab work with gloves). but paul wears his teaching (college students). our are identical except for the diameter, 4mm 14 or 18k white gold bands with a matte finish. they're pretty, and i like having it, even if it mostly sits in a box in my bedroom.

My wedding band is not on very often. I take it off to exercise and climb for both comfort and safety, and often forget to put it back on. I do have an engagement ring, and I wear that even less. I don't like to have stuff around my neck, so I just leave it at home or put it in my wallet. I have a climbing partner (who is a doctor) who wears his unless he is climbing cracks. He says he doesn't feel like he would hurt his finger on face climbs. I do think he's got a point?

We got cheapo silver ones ($10 each) & I lost mine within 1 year! My fingers swell & shrink, and I think it just fell off one day. Going ringless never seemed unusual to me. I never remember my parents having them, although my mom apparently lost at least two engagement rings, and my dad was a mechanic so it would just be unwise to wear a ring.

Well, not to judge or anything, but I would still consider this a very bad idea, and you may want to let him know. There could occasionally be snags on the rock that could possibly catch on a ring on a fall even on face climbs, and the results would still be bad. I cannot count the face climbs I've done that have subtle fingerjam-esque holds on them. Not to mention, if he injures a tendon pulley, his finger may swell up before he can get the ring off. I would NEVER wear a ring climbing. Ever. And probably not climb with anyone who would, either.

Wearing you ring climbing will wear it out...not ideal if you want to wear it forever. It is also dangerous, my dad caught his once, didn't de-glove but due to swelling and pain had to have it cut off. i wear mine all the time otherwise, unless digging with a spade (terrible callouses) I have a zip pouch on my chalk bag where it is safe and with me, others wear it around their neck on a cord.

So yesterday I went climbing and I left my rings on. I have two. One is a wedding ring and one is this super cool white gold ring. I wear them on the same finger of each hand for balance. I just like it that way. So yesterday I took my kids climbing and decided to try the rings to see what I thought. Half way up the second 5.8 pitch I was getting really nervous (not about the climbing) about a finger getting stuck and ripped off. I clipped a bolt and took off both rings. I try to avoid jugs if possible (on 5.8/5.9) and get on slopers and such. Rings take away so much on non-jug climbs. I seriously think at harder pitches rings would hamper climbing a ton. On easier pitches I think you'll rip off a finger in no time. I slotted into a nice hand crack, grabbed a flake that is inside and my finger got stuck. It wasn't *hard* stuck but I had to do a little wiggling to get it unstuck. Had I slipped I'd only be counting to 9 today. That was enough for me.

Got it :) I guess we are not wearing them while climbing then. Gotta by some really thin cord and keep that in the chalk bag :)

obviously you've heard enough but one more... my wedding band got caught just grabbing a tree truck for balance while descending a steep section of trail. As my hand slid around the trunk it slices right into the crease right at the base on the palmside of my ring finger. Not bad , certainly not tragic, but hurt like hell and too forever to heal. Rings and any athletic endeavor are not a great combo.

Congratulations! As everyone else said, no rings while climbing. Try to remember to take it off while you are still at home, as they can be very difficult to find after being placed in a chalk bag for "safe keeping" when you remember half way up a climb you still have it on!

I have a wedding band (plain, no stone) and an engagement ring. I climb two days during the week and usually all weekend long. What I do is have my rings on on the no-climbing days and take them off when I go to bed so the next morning I go to work without the rings and be ready to climb afterwork. :-)

This is the most depressing thread ever. BF asked what kind of engagement ring I might want and I said "No heart diamonds...and make sure I can wear it climbing." Blah. Not even in the gym, eh? I don't normally wear rings, so this isn't an issue, typically.
