We're looking at getting show shoes for xmas for ice climbing approaches. I was going to try to get a women's snowshoe for myself, but does it make that much of a difference? The biggest difference is the shoe width, right? Or are there other things too? In some brands there's a noticeable width difference, in others they're almost the same as then men's (but come is girlier colours).

Differences depend on the brand. With tubbs (whom i'm not a huge fan of period) there's really not much of a difference either than a shrink and pink. I've got a pair of Atlas Elektra's 1225's, and atlas makes women's models with a tapered back because women walk slightly more duck foot than men, so a narrower tail prevents stepping on the tail or walking akwardly to prevent that. The 12 series have climb bars, which rock.
you can see the tubbs aren't that narrow in back
I get people returning broken tubbs a few times a week with broken bits and pieces. Have never seen a pair of atlases come back except when someone ran over them with their truck.

Yes, I was looking at the Atlases vs a brand made in Canada. http://www.rei.com/product/759840 VS http://www.mec.ca/...;bmUID=1228150706936 The Women's GVs were a little narrow compared to the Men's but not like the difference between the men's and woman's Atlas shoes. Biner, you like the Atlas? What would be the difference between to 1027 Plus and the 12 series? The 1027 Plus looks the same as the 1127. Is this correct or is REI fooling me with the wrong photo? Good to know you approve of the Atlas geometry in general and find that the width between brands does make a difference. So people actually break them because they're not narrow enough? Or is it because of other problems?

I guess that's why I'm looking at these Atlas 10 Plus series from REI. In their photo they have heel lifters. In fact, they look just like the 11 series I was looking at at MEC. REI - Atlas 1027 Elektra Plus Snowshoes - '07 Women's:
http://www.rei.com/product/759840 MEC - Atlas 1127 Snowshoes (Women's):
http://www.mec.ca/...;bmUID=1228161163709 That's why I'm wondering if they might have screwed up the photo or something on the REI site. For $100 less than at MEC (ignoring exchange rates) its a pretty darn good deal.

they added the heel lift to the ten series last season. the decking material is MUCH burlier on the 12, the binding much more padded and comfortable with freeze proof straps, and the crampons are insane! real squirell stompers. i'll try and take a picture of mine, need to go dig them out anyway!

also, the metal frame is tapered instead of tubular, which makes the frame stronger. all atlas crampons are stainless steel, whereas only the tubbs mnteering models have stainless.

Ahem. Pardon me for asking, but what are you and Macherry doing in the ladies room? It's a bit like entering the ladies washroom and finding 2 men in there. Though that incident only happened 1-3 times when I was younger then I realized I'd entered the Gents washroom by mistake. I thought the ladies room meant no men allowed

And no, it does not mean that men aren't allowed. What a silly notion that would be. Mr. Monkey was just tossing a joke back to a mutual friend who had just tossed a joke to me....all on topic I might add (kinda). BTW - I still haven't gotten my answer from Biner about the stepping on them because they're not narrow enough, destroying them, or if they got destroyed for other reasons.

I'm not sure that stepping on your tails will lead to ultimate destruction, it's just awkward and will trip you...it's lie stepping on your shoelaces. Tubbs get destroyed pretty easily, their weakspot is the bolt that holds the binding to the shoe.
