Hey have any of you ladies ever had a copper IUD? good? bad? how long? I'm sick of being on hormones, but i don't know that i know anyone who has ever had the copper one.

I used the Mirena. It's not copper and it had a small amount of hormone. I had it for 5 years and it was easy/no issues.

I have not used it myself, but I can tell you that about 15% of women end up having it removed because of menstrual problems; if you have a history of bad cramps or heavy bleeding you would be better off with the kind that has progesterone rather than copper.. Certain women with smaller or larger uteruses can't use them. 10% of them are expelled during the first year of use!
And thats all I remember from my OB-GYN rotation!

bleh, this is what i have been reading. and i definitely have a history of bad cramps. they're really bad when i'm off the pill. but i feel like the hormones make me crazy.

have you tried different pills with different hormone combinations?

The pill has a lot of hormones....My understanding is that the Mirena IUD just has progesterone that trickles out and makes the uterus inhospitable to inplantation. It actually HELPS cramps. As they say on TV "Ask your healthcare profesional if **** is right for you!". If 10% fall out, it still means that 90% stay in!

my healthcare provider (kaiser) has a policy of not implanting IUD's in patients that have not had children, due to the albiet remote possibility of scratching or otherwise damaging the lining of uterus, rendering one infertile. they would not give me an IUD at all. In fact, neither would planned parenthood. don't know if you're a mom, but if you aren't, check with your provider to see if they will even do it

i have university health insurance, so they will pretty much give me whatever no-baby treatments i want. 90 bucks for either, though it looks like copper is out. if my cramps got worse then they were before i went on hormones.. well... "before" was puking all night and sometimes falling asleep in the shower. so worse would be bad.
but in the mean time i went to an older style pill that's supposed to have both less overall hormones but also, less testosterone-antagonistic affects. perhaps that will smooth things out a bit. doc says "three months is a fair trial, if you hate it, come back and we'll do something different."

This sounds like bullshit.
Not you, the insurance company's policy.
Do they cover BCPs and other forms of contraception?
