Last year people thought my 19 year old daughter was a boy. She had a shaved head and I guess she kind of looked like a boy. I think she thought it was funny.

I've seen some pics of boys out ice climbing with rosey checks and darker lips (because of the cold and exercise) that I've thought were girls at first glance.

Sometimes people mistake my bf for a woman...even though he is 6 ft. tall, has a beard, and has a striking resemblence to Jesus. People see long hair and immediately click on female.

Usually I get mistaken for being the wife/girlfriend/concubine of my (generally male) partners, who range in age from my age to 25+ years my senior. Yikes.

A friend of mine was pulled over in her car because the officer thought at first glance that she was a 10 year old boy out for a joyride.

I had a neighbour who was about 24 but looked barely 14. She had been stopped at least twice by the police while driving. She became pregnant. Once when she was about 8 months or so along I gave here a ride to the store and helped her shop because her husband was away. I got some really dirty looks from the other shoppers, 35 years old, 6´, 215 lb guy shopping with a pregnant, not quite 5´ tall 14 year old girl.

Last December I went climbing with a friend (female)around Spain. One day, we were climbing and a car stopped near us, a couple came out and they started asking my friend, who was down, if she was a girl or a boy (she has short hair). They weren´t sure about me,they couldn´t see me very well cause I was getting to the top (well, I have longer hair...).They couldn´t believe that two girls could climb without men!!! So, we have audience for a while...

Last May I shaved my head to get rid of my dreadlocks. The next day, and first time out in public, I went to the rec. center to swim. In the locker room and older lady looked me straight in the face and proceeded to tell me I couldn't be in there because it was the women's room. I was completely speechless. After a very long pause, while I contemplated how to defend my gender, my friend Sandra responded, "This is a girl." A little bit of a shock for the first day out without any hair. A month later my calc. 3 teacher used "he" while talking about me. Funny because I had made quite the effort to look female the first week of class and was just a bit lazy with my dressing that day. Lazy meaning a baggy shirt. I found it more often older people than younger that mistook my gender. It wasn't a problem though. Shaving my head was one of the most unexpectedly delightful experiences of my life. I think every woman should try it once. It was liberating.

When I was 24, I was at the airport getting ready to check in. The lady behind the counter stared at me blankly and then asked me in a weird way if I had a passport or any other ID. I gave her my driver's license. She blushed and promptly apologized. She thought I was younger than 16.

i have short hair and live in a beanie and hoodie - i get the "did you find everything alright, sir?" all the time. i used to answer yes or no but then i'd get that look and then have to deal with their embarassment so now i just nod and let them think i am a guy, really it is easier.

I wonder how long until backfires? Some random person: "Excuse me sir . .. " craygirl: "Did you call me sir? Do I look like a sir to you?" Random person: "Yes you look like a sir. If I thought you looked like a woman I would have called you ma'am."

I believe after that, though, she started dressing like a girl again. I love being a bitch. Its fun.
