hi, I am looking to purchase a pair of shoes for my girlfriend who had just gotten into climbing. She's small and only wears a size 5 normally, I was curious what shoes you have tried and liked, and any advice that I could relay back to her. I have had no problems finding shoes for myself when I needed them but obviously want her to get the best out there for her

I normally wear a 5-6 depending on how the shoe is made, what it's made of, whether I need to wear socks, etc. etc. etc. When I went looking for shoes, it took me forever to find a shoe that fit. I had to move down into the children's sizes of 5.10's but still wasn't happy with the way they felt. I ended up with a pair of Mad Rock Mugen's. They were reasonably priced, fit great, and have velcro so they're easy on and off between climbs. I got a five and they've stretched out a bit since I got them, so I'm not sure if I'll need to go smaller next time or not, but finding shoes for small feet is not as easy as it would seem. Good luck.

I really like my 5.10 women's zlippers! My friend has the Mad Rock Mugens and we wear the same size but I can not wear the Mugens. I really like the Zlippers and the are so comfortable! Highly recommended from me!! Good luck!

not to be unhelpful, but shoes is the kind of thing that needs to be tried on. thats why every brand has so many models, because everyone likes something different. btw, my favorite is sportiva mythos.

i gather you're an experienced climber... try searching the gear and beginner's forums for more shoe threads, you'll find lots of suggestions there too, as well as information on proper fit that you can print out for her. ultimately it's about what's most comfortable. i wear red chili's habenero shoes. as a beginner i like the board lasted soles, they're stiffer. the laces tighten in one pull, which makes it tough to adjust one area like tightening the arch...but it works for me, and they go on and off faster. also i like the asymmetrical toe point at the inside of the toe not in the middle of the shoe. i can toe into smaller stuff than with other shoes, plus the shape fits my foot better. hope that helps.

I agree that she should try them on because everyone has different feet and uncomfortable shoes when you are first starting sucks. I wear 5.10 Sapphires and I love them. They fit my feet great and I have very narrow feet. I also have a pair of Moccasins which hurt like crazy but I'm still breaking them in. Do buy the idea that they need to hurt. Again when someone firsts starts you want them to be comfortable so find ones that fit snug but aren't painful. She can get those later when she turns into a hardcore climber.

Put another vote for Sportiva Mythos, unisex brand for me. I love them and have had them resoled twice now. For doing all day multipitch trad I've strated to use my Boreal Equinox's as a more comfortable shoe -- they have a wider toe box though which actually leaves a little too much room for my right foot. If your gal has narrow feet skip the Equinox's.
