Bouldering in Istanbul

Hi there,

I've recently moved to Istanbul and am looking for somewhere, anywhere to climb. Bouldering preferred - there was a place called Boulderhane about 2 mins from my flat in Taksim, but I've heard it's closed down (and I couldn't find it on a map anyway). Anyone know anywhere?

Cheers,
F

I found out that boulderhane does exist. I just called them. Their website address is wrong but they're listed on another site. Try googling Turkey Rock Climbing Walls.

Yes, since asking I found them. I suggested I could make them a new better site, but the guy that runs it is selling it on to two climbers so perhaps they'll revamp the site (with a google maps link!) - Ah, heres' a top-tip: 'Roumelihan' is a building, not a road & If you end up at the Turkish Communist Party HQ you've gone up the wrong staircase.

This is about as close as I can get on Google Maps:

http://tinyurl.com/n9uhue

Or paste in these coordinates:
41° 2'6.39"N
28°58'51.32"E

(also works in Google Earth)

It's in the Rumelihan building which to the right (east) of the mosque (the entrance of Rumelihan is to the left of the AFACAN RESTAURANT, but be warned, there are two of these on Istiklal sk. (It's NOT the one near Tunel).

Go up the first staircase on the left (with a sign for Cafe Zin) when you get to Cafe Zin, Boulderhane is an unmarked green door opposite the entrance to the restaurant.

As I said earlier, if you end up at the Turkish Communist Party HQ, you're up the wrong staircase (both physically and politically IMHO).

Good Luck! See you Wednesday :-)

Hey there - I think it's open from 6pm to 10:30pm (I expect Ibrahim (the owner) has a day job).

I've been there only about 5 times so far.

The way they've got routes set is odd (IMO) - there are printouts of the wall with the routes marked on them, usually someone sits and points at your next hold with a laser (or you memorise it). A lot of it is overhanging too - I'm still too out of practice for most of the room but everyone there is friendly (and probably regular) - usually there's someone who speaks English too.

It's 10tl a go + 3? / 5? for shoes if you need a pair (though they may not have your size).

I'll be going next Wednesday again I expect.

By chance does anyone know where Boulderistanbul is? I heard it's on the Asian side and is fairly new but can't seem to figure out how to get there.

Does anyboday have recent recommendations about bouldering or climbing in Istanbul? Last time I have been there I found some locations I searched on the web being closed.

I will be there again from Apr 5th untill April 13th if somebody likes to join...

Hey Yeahschke,
As far as I know boulderhane is open, but you need to go there late afternoon, after 6pm or so.

The boulderhane on the asian side is next to the University. It would be a real ordeal to get there from the European side. If you were going to make that effort why not climb at the sports climbing place at Balikayalar.
