How's the sport/trad climbing in the british isles? i've heard the peak district in england was good.. any input is greatly appreciated.. thanks..

where do you fancy heading to and for how long? What time of year are you interested in heading over here for? do you want trad or sport? we have lots over here but i kinda need a bit more info to help properly.

We plan on heading that way towards early summer of NEXT year, 2008 and we'd like to do some of the typical touristy stuff around.. we plan on definately hitting london, and ireland but really, we're up for anything. we'll be in a van so we'll be all over. really, any place that you reccomend us check out, we'll go.. We're lookin for sport an trad and i also know we're interested in climbing peaks district.

early summer is a good time for the peak. especially some of the higher (up the hill) crags.
if you have a van, then check out places like langdale and borrowdale in the lake district for longer multipitch stuff in some fantastic country side.
down around london there is harrisons and bowls rocks, for the sandstone junkies (not great stuff imo).
around the south there is some great sea cliff climbing at pembroke (south wales).
im not so sure on the sports stuff being a trad climber myself, but there is some in north wales around the great orm and llandudno (again mix of sea cliff and ex sea cliff). i will have a word with the lads and see what i can find out.

if im still in this country (looking into the possibility of becoming kiwi) then, then by all means look me up.
after speaking to the lads in the pub last night, they say there is a lot of bolt clipping to be had in the peak district as well, and some in the Yorkshire dales. its all on the limestone though, not the grit.
grit being purely trad ethics.

if you really want to do some sports climbing while there, as Gristoner mentioned, there is some stuff to do on the South Coast: Swanage and Portland for example are bolted (Swanage alaso has trad) limestone sea cliffs. It is OK, but really, if you want to do great sports climbing, head down to France or Spain instead! In England, you're better off stciking with trad: Peaks are fabulous, and apart from trad, there is endless amount of bouldering too.
Pembroke in Wales is also great.

There's stacks of great stuff to do in the UK!
Spring through to autumn are good times to go. My favourite places are:
-Cornwall...great for granite trad..single/4-pitch routes on sea cliffs.
-Snowdonia NP and Tremadog in Wales ...lots of great mountain routes to do as well as trad crags to push your grade
-the Lake District...beautiful mountains, some great climbing, trad
-Scotland...in a league of its own...skye is amazing...don't go mid summer though else you'll get eaten to death by midges.
-Peak District...good in the mid-seasons for single pitch trad

If however you want bolts and limestone I would go to France or Italy.
