I am trying to plan my trip to the UK for August (I know seems a long way off) I will be there for three weeks and am trying to figure out if there would be enough climbing (mainly bouldering) to do in England, or should I take a week and go to France...or anywhere else? How is the weather in August for climbing there too? Any input would be really appreciated.

Hi there is more then enough bouldering in the UK to keep you busy for 2 weeks, you could spend 2 weeks bouldering in the Peak District or Yorkshire alone. the links on above are good also look at http://www.yorkshiregrit.com You "should" get good weather in august, but weather in England can be unpredictable. if its sunny in the morning, it could be raining by 12.

I guess it depends what you want to do. For bouldering, there is a lot in the UK, although if you have time, you probably should try and visit Fontainebleau too. If you are also into sports climbing, then it is definitely worth going to France (bearing in mind that some of the crags will be very hot in August). If trad is more your thing, then England and France both have a lot to offer. And I second the comment on the weather: you never quite know what to expect in the UK!

Thank you for all the input. I will definately go to Fontainebleau, from what I understand its not that far to get there. I will check out the bouldering and sport when I'm there. I do have a few more questions though; like should I lug my crash pad all the way there, or better to buy/sell or rent one? Is there a lot of places to camp and can I travel around between crags in the UK without a car? When the time comes closer, I may post again looking to hook up with people ;) Thanks again!! Kelly

Everything, including climbing gear, is expensive in the UK, so to the extent you can bring your carsh pad without having to pay for excess luggage, that'd probably be cheaper. Europe is cheaper, but you'll still be looking at €100 for a basic crash pad. You'll be able to camp pretty much everywhere, but I think it is probably difficult to get from crag to crag to crag without a car (note: petrol is very expensive, too!). Closer to the date, you should probably post on http://www.ukclimbing.com, as there may be people you can hook up with who may have a car.

We had zero midges in Edinburgh last August, but I don't know about the bouldering up there...

Thanks for the heads up on the bugs...but I don't have the luxury of picking my time off...going to have to deal with humid august and all the negatives that will go with it!! But honestly I won't care...."A bad day climbing is better than any day at work!"

those buggers can squeeze through mosquito nets, just forewarning bud. Take lots of DEET or another less toxic eco-friendly variety.

If your using public transport to get between cities its quite efficient (though expensive) getting out to where the climbing is might be more difficult. Some of the best bouldering (IMHO) are remote grit boulders high on the moors, and unless you plan to walk for a few hours it might be worth thinking about hiring a car, some of the budget car hire places hire out small hatchbacks for next to nothing. If your climbing in any of the national parks camping is plentiful, out side of the national parks it may be more spaced, but still available. And yes in August the midges will be out in force, in England they are not to bad during the day, but come out in the evening and drive you nuts. In Scotland they are ten times worse.

Hi! In your searching have you found any bouldering in Northumberland, UK (around newcastle) or Grenoble France? I will be in grenoble from August 25th-30th 2006 and in the UK from September 2nd-7th and would love to do some climbing. I only have shoes and a harness though. Thank for any info that you have! Morgan

Morgan Hm. Not sure about the UK stuff. But there is plenty of mutli-pitch sport climbing - not bouldering - in and all around Grenoble. Let me know if you want beta on sport climbs near there. Cheers, Taz

[quote="morgan2ski"]Hi! In your searching have you found any bouldering in Northumberland, UK (around newcastle) http://www.climbonline.co.uk/index.htm Plenty of info on the North East above. You should also consider getting down to Yorkshire for a day or so, excellent bouldering to be had at Almscliffe, Caley and Earl Crag.

Can't help you about England but I strongly suggest climbing in France, in the South (Provence) there are some very nice spots. Sainte Baume, Sainte Victoire, Calanques Just spend the best week of my life there
