Alrighty, I posted this in the International thread, but I didnt get to much action there so hopefully I'll get some here.
I'm moving to Italy at the end of summer 07, to go to culinary school. I'll be out there for 3 yrs atleast, living in florence. I pretty positive that I'll be a solid 5.10/5.11 climber by then if not better, I would just like some beta on some places to climb that i can make a day trip out of, or even a weekend trip or even better, a climbing buddy. I'm into sport climbing, havent ever tried trad, i dont know anyone that does trad, thanks for the help if anyone has any to offer.

Hey Sam,
I'm not all that familar with the climbing in the Florence area, but you could check out www.fuorivia.com/forum/ which is an Italian climbing forum filled with nice, helpful climbers. Many of them speak English. One place that I do know of that's not so far from Florence is Bistmantova, a sandstone climbing area between Parma and La Spezia, a bit north of where you'll be. It has sport routes and multi-pitch routes(some bolted, some not bolted). If you're willing to drive a few hours for weekend trips, that will open up many more possibilities. Finale Ligure on the coast in Liguira has amazing sport climbing. I believe there's also a sport climbing guide book for the Toscana (Tuscany) region, which you can buy when you get here.

In my experience
For one day trip Monsummano is very nice site for winter (hot in summer)
Procinto has lot of multipitches, with Candalla is very good for summer. Nice places, full of nature, art and history (tha village of Stazzema is famous for a secnd world war tragedy)
Trad climbing on Alpi Apuane, north wall of Pizzo d'Uccello is the best
Don't forget Arco (Sarca valley) and the Dolomites, it's 400 km but it's worth going there for the weekend or short holydays
I live in Imola, 80 km from florence, so let's keep in contact!
