Don't laugh, those boat tours are amazing after three or four glasses of wine and a hash joint. The sex museum is pretty cool and if you leave the red light district the urban hiking/biking is great.

The Anne Frank museum is indeed fantastic! They have made the museum in the same building where she was hiding, so you are looking at the real thing. It's incredibly powerful. See a live sex show. It's not a "dirty" thing to do there- it's quite normal. And when else would you ever get a chance to do that? Taz

People said the obvious... watch you dont get too messed up. If you like art the Rijks museum is nice and everyone loves the Van Gogh museum. Vandelpark is a nice place to hangout during the day. Have fun.

I agree that the Van Gogh museum is worth a visit. If you happen to skateboard they had a pretty good skatepark when I was there about 7 years ago.

If you are looking for interesting things to do I would highly recommend the "Boom Chicago" dinner theater/bar. They have improv comedy there nightly that requires heavily on the audience; furthermore, the bar is one of the coolest atmospheres I have experienced in Amsterdamn. Boom Chicago

I actually just got back from a 4 day Amsterdam trip which was awesome (third time there). Aside from all of the obvious things one would suggest (and recommend by the way) I'd try the following. Van Gogh Museum, normally the Rijksmuseum but it is under extreme renovation right now, the boat tours are actually a blast and gives your feet a break (we ended up wandering 15 miles a day by foot). The boat tours are day passes and you get a discount to the museums with it so I would get it early in the day. Mostly, I would just wander around semi-aimlessly. It is definitely one of the most beautiful cities to just walk around in. The architecture is awesome, there's a breathtaking canal every couple of blocks and somehow a canalside bar always located where you need it. The people are also super friendly and if your not daring enough to try out your Dutch almost everyone speaks English. In regards to wife and coffeeshop- you might be suprised. Every shop is different so you definitely have the black light rave party shops and then the nice "corner" tavern type that the locals go to and you could confuse for an American coffeeshop if it weren't for the enticing smell wafting from them which is definitely not coffee beans.
