My wife and I are planning to spend next Summer (2010) Climbing Verdon Gorge.
Looking at Vacation rental, looks like studio ar around for the six week we plan on being there. (Anyone here know of a good rental in the area?)
What's the best guidebook for the area?
Any advice? route recommendations?

Nice read. Still thinking baout buying a summer home there. Lake Tahoe is also on the list, so is North Conway.

I am not looking for places to stay, I am looking for a place to buy. I have an agent keeping an eye out.

Hi again ,
It is a much better place if you want to climb, than Burgundy.
Verdon is great climbing. I would not totally qualify it as Sports and I do not think it can be considered as totally Trad. [I have climbed there a long time ago and I have been climbing Trad in the US now for the last five years at my level].
In Verdon, you can climb almost all year; the region is quite beautiful and if you want to go to other sites, there are plenty within 2 hours driving (Baou St Jeanet near Nice, Calanques near Marseilles, etc ... ) ... The sea is also one hour drive ...
Ski is also available in winter in the southern alps, not that far . The climate is much milder than Lake Tahoe and of course than North Conway and if you are interested in ice or mountain climbing, Chamonix is not that far.

Thanks. I have an agent looking in the Verdon Gorge area. It's definitely higher on my list, but not as many places are coming up.
I'll be spending most of 20110 Summer in Verdon Gorge with my wife.
They are so many places to live in the world, deciding where to buy a house is dificult.

Difficult yes, but factoring in language doesn't effect me much. I lived in Japan and learned Japanese, I lived in China and picked up Chinese, now I live in Indonesia and trying to pick that up too.
I'm fluent in French and Spanish, speak a bit of german, I think it would come back quickly if I lived in Germany again. I understand Spanish enough to survive and climb in Spanish countries.
Anyone can learn a language, the key is believing you can before you start. If you live somewhere and need the language, you'll learn it. It's not the same as learning it in school, that's for sure.

I have been climbing a for quite some time in France, Switzerland, Italy and a little bit in Germany (at my level ...). Am mostly a mountain climber.
New Yorker is a hard language to understand, that's for sure.

Italy: I can only talk about the Dolomites, a fantastic place to climb, with everything from routes of one pitch to big walls.
However, it is on the northern border with Austria or Swizerland (South Tyrol) and a mountainous area; so snow and ski in winter and in summer you always need a jacket within reach.
Aviano and Trieste, I have never been there ; very familiar with Croatia and Bosnia which are "across" the border but not for climbing.
Spain, travelled but never climbed there. Weather is certainly conducive but very hot in the south in summer.
BTW, being from Paris, I never had too much problem to speak the "New Yorker" and "bravo" (in French!!) for your language abilities ... a great asset ...
